Auckland win a thriller

Auckland pulled off victory in the most unlikely of circumstances against Tasmania. Losing the toss and having to bowl first on a flat batting wicket, the Auckland bowling was plundered by Rudolph (97 not out) and Kaye (55), with Plummer (1/71) being the main victim.

Chasing a formidable 290 for victory, Montgomerie (36) and Godwin (26) saw the runs flowing early, but wickets fell fairly regularly and the score slipped to 130/5 in the 24th over.

With nothing to lose and everything to gain, young Rikki Briers joined Rowell at the crease in the makings of a game winning 160-run partnership which stood unbroken at the end. Briers ended unbeaten on 72 and Rowell played superbly to 102 not out off only 99 balls.

Summary:

Tasmania 289/8 (50 overs)
J Rudolph 97*, Z Kaye 55
R Briers/D London 2/43, K Godwin 2/53

Auckland 290/5 (49.5 overs)
G Rowell 102*, R Briers 72*

Result: Auckland won by 5 wickets
Man of the Match: R Briers

Warwickshire continued their impressive one day season, beating Worcestershire by 5 wickets, to recapture the Steve Prefontaine Memorial Cup.

Batting first Worcestershire crumbled under the pressure of a fantastic display from Paul Hitchcock who captured 5/37. Pipe made 60 has Worcestershire struggled through to 194 all out.

In reply all Warwickshire batsmen made starts but no one went on with it. Astle top scored with 34, as Warwickshire won easy.

Well Surrey batted first on a beautiful looking(as always) MA Chidambaram Stadium Pitch, Kolkota. But it was a somewhat lack-luster performance from them to say the least. But it was some good bowling that helped in bringing them undone. With Agarkar sent in to open the innings (Marc have you obtained something off Weed Boy???) it proved to be a stupid move. He went for 1 on his fourth ball, caught behind by parlane off the bowling of mann. The next wicket was fellow opener Puttick, he was soon run out for 7 off just 11 balls. Surrey 2/17.Mane and Wickrama batted together, shortly, for a 1 run partnership. Wickrama the next out for 1 off 3 balls. Caught behiund by parlane off Mann again. It was thanks to Parker (28) and Mane (35) that the innings found some sort of direction. But then another collapse broguht together Petal and former TN boy Shrinivas for a last wicket stand. Petal was eventually dismissed for 49 off 41 balls, stumped by parlane off the bowling of Yuvraj Singh. Shrinivas ended up on a well made 27* off 23 balls. Surrey All Out for 199

In the end the total just wasn't enough. Gangauly went cheaply for 5. Before Birch and Yuvraj got together to put on a 83 run stand. Yuvraj out for 56 (yet another 50) from 48. 19 runs later birch was out for a well compiled 35 from 43. Webster next man out for 29. But with the score on 4-144 it was always going to be easy. Van Jaarsveld wnet cheaply from 7 and from there CHapman and Swann controlled the show. TN 5/200

In other news Waricks overcame Worcs in a surprisingly similar game. Worcs made 192 and Waricks won by 5 wkts (sound familiar?). Which means waricks stay top of the table. However they have been shown that one slip-up and top spot is ours. We did also have a better run rate than them this week

Surrey: 199 All Out from 49.1 overs (Petal 49, Mane 35) ( S Mann 4/32, R Webster 2/30)

Tamil Nadu: 5/200 from 35.1 overs (Y Singh 58, M Chapman 41*) (Lambert 2/34, Shrinivas 1/31)

Tamil Nadu won by five wickets

Province haven't given up hope

Western Province showed that they are not quite finished yet in the OD form of the game. After coming through the first half of the season with just the one win to their credit, they needed to stand up and be counted against Glamorgan.

The Glamorgan side won the toss and elected to bat against an inventive Province side who threw the ball to off spinner W Quinn to try and do some damage. The idea payed huge dividends as Quinn and Nelson went about destroying Glamorgan's top order and leaving them wrangling at 5-25. The innings never really got much better for poor Glamorgan as captain Samaraweera made sure that a respectable total was never reached as he came on and took 4-18. By far the star was Quinn though who ate the top order for breakfast taking 4-26 off10.

96 poultry runs was never going to be enough, and Llewellyn showed that he is still hungry for more runs this half of the season finishing 40 not out, and Hamish Nelson also made things exciting scoring 36 off 32. All up Province home by 9 wickets and 32 overs.

Slats4ever "An impressive win which will bump our NRR up a bit The gamble with Quinn paid off so we're still in with a shot in this competition.

Another win to Northern Districts in the One Day game after a 77 run win against Karachi.

Team Manager Eyes_Only was concerned that a score of 190 a.o wasn't going to be nearly enough. But tight bowling from Blignaut (2/46), Hauritz (3/27) and Aldridge (3/25) saw the team home.

On the batting side, good performances from Cardew (44 from 51 balls faced) and Sangakarra (51 from 84 balls faced) set a firm foundation.

While Eyes_Only was pleased with the overall result, she is concerned that some players are making starts without going on with it.

"We have been happy with the overall performance of the team but some players are not pulling their weight. We will give them one last chance in the next round before we will look at replacing them." Eyes_Only said at a press conference before training today.

On a sadder note for the team, Nathan Hauritz has been ruled out of the team for five weeks with a calf strain. "We will be looking for a replacement for Nathan at training later this week and wish him all the best for a speedy recovery from his injury." Eyes_Only said.

To sum up the result of the match:

Northern Districts beat Karachi by 77 Runs.

Colts Hammer Bulls

Colts revived their OD season on the weekend with some brilliant batting. Sharath and Madanagopal added 107 after Guneratne was removed early for 2. the partnership was broken however by Stuart, who got the bulls back into the game removing both Madanagopal (55 from 60) and than Anderson in 3 balls. Stuart kept the momentum going the bulls way removing Klusener for just 12 soon after. from there however it all went the colts way. Liynage batted solidly with Sharath for 30 (41). Sharath was finally removes 2 balls later for 92 (114). Payne and Shaw than combined for 82 from 68 balls to really boost the colts score. Stuart was the pick of the bowlers with 5/63.

Shaw than continued his good work removing Hayden and Beasley in the 2nd over leaving the bulls reeling at 2/10. Tikolo than took control of the innings batting well with Bradshaw (17 from 23) to et the score to 54 before a brilliant peice of fielding form Lee had Bradshaw caught short of his ground. Maher added the same number of runs before edging one to payne off Klusener. Tikolo's innings ended with teh introduction of colts rookie star Daly who sent one straight through him ending a fine innings of 48 from just 52 balls. Hogg and Hodgson tried to ressurect the bulls innings again but both failed to go on with it. Hodgson was removed for 31 slashing at a wide one from Klusener exposing the tail. Bichel batted well with hodd but they could not do enough. Sullivans and Daly were reintroduced and cleaned up the Bulls tail Sullivan removing Bichel and Daly Hogg in consecutive overs. Daly than removed Stuart and was on a hat trick. Pettifer survived the hat trick ball but the innnings ended the next over with hopes caught behind off Sullivan. Daly was the pick of the bowlers with 3/50 from 9 overs.

a good all round performance from the colts with S Sharath being named MOTM for his return to form with 92.

Lancashire kept their hopes of avoiding relegation from Division 1 alive with an upset victory over leaders SA! (a first if I'm not mistaken Blewy?)

Take a look at the Division 1 OD table. It's amazingly close!
