Round 1: One Day Reports

Umpire Money

State Vice-Captain
YORKSHIRE V NSW

The battle of the relegated Div1 teams. A must win game but yorkshire went down by 9 runs in the game of the round.

NSW put up a very respectable score with some of their batsmen scoring some runs. Darren Gough with 4 wickets.

Then Yorkshire put up a valant effort with tendulkar making 83. But were 9 runs short. We should probably have gone faster.

NSW will be a tough team to be able to beat to promotion.

Jason Pike had this to say after the game
"yeh we suck in one dayers look at our averages. If we can just get a few one day batsmen we will have a chance so our aim is to stay in Div 2 until next season and then stake a claim."

Then when one of the news reporters started heckling him Jason ran up and decked him and said thats what we are going to do to Mumbai next week.

KENT BOWLER'S SEE THE SIDE HOME (Only Just though!) AFTER FLOWER HIT'S TON

In the opening game of the new season, Kent had the long haul flight to Australia to face a strong Western Australian outfit.

Kent won the toss and elected to bat first...

Kent's batting never really fired all day, but bits scores saw the side to a monster target, the top three were all back in the hut with just 59 on the board.

With a major contrast at the middle, A.Flower a worst than shockingly bad last season and the unexpected hero D.Marsh who ended with a avg in the region of 121. Lucky for Kent A.Flower found his old form and forged a super pairing with D.Marsh who offered stable support.

After the pair had put on 64, D.Marsh 42 (36) fell to a super catch in the outfield. Jayawardene obviously had forgot to drink his Coffee and quickly headed back to get it before it got cold! Out for a super Golden Duck.

At 125/5 WA were looking in complete control and were already into the batting bowlers of the line up. But the guys as so offen last year did the job well, Flower & Hutton adding 81 for the 6th wicket.

The score at a semi respectable 206/6 - With only the bowlers and Flower left, it was now hit and hope! McCague / Saggers both feel cheaply, but another fine allie in Murtagh 35 (24) was found much to the manager's suprise. A fine piece of hitting by the by the young gun, eased the pressure of Flower and took the score to a very impressive 295 before Murtagh rode his luck just one to many times.... Hawkins being the 2nd Golden Duck of the inngs left the score as it was.

Kent - 295 All Out - 49 Overs

A.Flower 104 (94), D.Marsh 42 (36) - Peters 5/35 (9), Hazare 2/57 (9)

In reply to the 296 to win, WA made a poor start with the hard hitter Gilly back in the hut for just 18, Janger followed and soon after Martyn. Leaving WA in nearly iddentical situation to that of Kent. 41/3

Hussey and Keegan set about recovering the damage and did a fine job in the process, adding 85 odd for the 4th wicket before the run out of Hussey for 49.

Keegan was joined by Goodwin who added a futher 61 before the danager man Keegan was removed in a stuning spell by strike bowler Saggers.

Ostler joined Goodwin in the middle needing just a shade of 100 to win. They set about the job at express pace and looked certain to pull of the big chase, when it just appeared to run out of steam and allowed the Kent bowlers to apply enough pressure to stem the flow of runs and pull of a suprising win in WA's own backyard.

Western Australia - 290/5 - 50 Overs

Goodwin 73*, Keegan 72, Ostler 52*, Hussey 49 - Murtagh 71/2 (10), Saggers 39/1 (9)

KENT WIN BY 5 RUNS

U19 Captain
Bowlers Guide Canterbury to Victory

In the opening match of season 3, Somerset were to travel to Canterbury for their one day encounter. Canterbury batted first and put on a relatively poor display. Only one batsmen in Jaffer performed as he made 118 n.o. out of Canterbury's 193, in just 42 overs. The next highest scorer being extras with 16. For Somerset the stars were Morris (4-40) and Bulbeck (3-30) who tore through the Canterbury top order.

Needing only 194 for victory at a run rate of less then 4, Somerset started poorly losing 2 quick wickets to be 2-9. Bowler and Kulatunga put on a decent partnership before another collapse, thanks to a good spell of bowling by Mills (3-39), put Somerset 7-80. A quick fire 40 from Morris wasnt enough as Somerset were bowled out for 133 off just 34 overs. Burson performed well with the ball taking 3-19, while Clarke had 2-17 in his WCC cricketing debut.

Man of the match went to Jaffer, narrowly ahead of Morris. Hopefully the batsmen will get some good practice in before the 2nd round of the OD competition.

Cricketer Of The Year
nsw v yorks

nsw favourites although nsw manager bugs was not all confident for the first hit out of the season after a lack luster pre season.

nsw batted first and new comer g kirsten was the star with the bat hitting almost his maiden tonne on debut for the club with a solid 98 (130). kallis, lara, cairns & haddin all got starts and probably should have gone on with it but yorks bowled well and when gough took a hatrick to wind up the innings nsw had hit a defendable 243 all out but was still a very gettable target.

bugs not overlly happy with the batting performance.

yorks needing 244 for victory batted well but had the same problems as nsw with only 1 batsmen getting a solid score and everyone else around him getting starts. tendulkar was 83* (95). all but one of the bowlers didnt pick up a wicket with star rookie d ferguson not even handed the ball (goffy whats hapening with the order lol). s lee was the pick with 10 overs 3 maidens 1 for 29.

yorks fell 9 short with 7 - 234.

not a convincing win for the blues but some solid performances which will get the boys warm for the season in hand.

mom: j kallis

bugs malone was heard saying he wasnt happy with the etam performance but was happy with some individual performances.

the blues next hit out is in the 4day game against south australia.

LANCASHIRE visit to SA (Division 1)

As I noted in the thread where people estimated the chances of their teams, I expect SA to be the team to beat in the OD competition, so I half expected to lose this one. However, I didn’t expect my team to roll over and die like this!

Lancashire batted first, but none of the batsmen fired with K.Baumgarner (38) and O.Beasley (33) being the top scorers. H.Axelby (9-2-34-5) and S.Bond (8-1-38-3) were devastating with the ball as they rolled Lancashire for a paltry 165 all out.

SA got off to a poor start in reply with M.Jenkins going first ball of the innings, but it was plain sailing from thereon in as D.Lehmann (66), R.Stratton (45no) and S.Williams (30) led the home side to a comfortable 7 wicket victory with plenty of time to spare. None of the Lancashire bowlers stood out, all being far too expensive which is totally out of character.

A disappointing start to the season, but there’s a long way to go yet!
