Round 1 - OD : Reports

U19 Captain
Canterbury WCC Debut

Canterbury made their WCC debut with a solid 26 run win over Somerset. Batting first Canterbury made 3 for 263 with all batsmen contributing. Sinclair topped scored with 65 while Johnson made 55 and Jaffer made a quick 54 off 41. Astle and McMillian also made solid amounts of 33 and 39 respectively. For Somerset, Wilson, Caddick and Adams all took 1 wicket.

In reply Somerset could only manage 237. The main wicket take was Dutch who used the turning pitch to take the first 3 wickets and finished with economical figures of 3-27 off 10 overs. Burson and Agarkar also contributed taking 3 and 2 wickets respectively. Johnson backed up his half century by taking 1 wicket. Only 3 of Somersets batsmen made good scores with Afridi (34), Blewett (63), and Kulatunga (52).

Canterbuty may make changes to the team for the next 1 day match due to concerns over the uneconomical bowling. This may mean an extra bowler may be used. But for now Canterbury will focus on their 4 day match with Chanderpaul (who Rich though would top score in this match but he didnt even bat ;) ), Mills and possibly Horsley and Roberts making their batting debut. Also Kirby is expected to make his debut.

KENT v ND
(match report submitted on behalf of ‘Eyes’)

ND made a disappointing start to their OD season when they were slaughtered at Kent to the tune of 207 runs!

The home side batted first and amassed a huge score of 303/4.
The two openers, M.Butcher and A.Flower, went early and at 32/2 the ND bowlers had made a promising start.
However, the strong Kent top and middle order then proceeded to rectify the situation in style with S.Waugh (90), D.Marsh (74no), G.Batty (52no) and B.Allen (48) all making an impressive start to the season.
Of the visiting bowlers, D.Tuffey toiled manfully without reward to return figures of 10-4-39-0 whilst G.Aldridge (10-1-68-2) and N.Bracken (9-1-59-2) picked up a couple of wickets each but were too expensive.

When ND came into bat, S.Styris, B.MacCullum and R.Hart were quickly removed and from 18/3, a weak ND batting lineup was always going to struggle.
J.Rhodes (43) and S.Fleming (29) recovered to take the side to 84/3, but then the wheels fell off completely as the last seven wickets fell within the space of 12 runs. ND all out for a highly embarrassing 96 to go down by a mammoth 207 runs!
All of the Kent bowlers impressed under such circumstances – S.Hutton (8-2-26-3), M.McCague (3-0-18-2), H.Singh (7-2-26-2), N.Smith (2-0-5-1) and M.Saggers (5-2-20-1).

International Captain
well it was a close game. only 26 runs in it. canterbury batted first and took full advantage of the absolutely abonemable bowling. Johnson got 55, Sinclair 55 and Jaffer a quick 54 from 41 balls. the SHOCKING bowilng figures were:
O M R W
M.Betts 10 3 43 0 P.Wilson 10 1 61 1 A.Caddick 10 0 56 1 A Adams 10 2 34 1 S.Afridi 10 0 58 0

Our batting effort was not too bad with bleawett an d kulatunga making 63 and 52 respectively and sharing in a 95 run partenership. afridi made 34. dutch took 3/27 for the visitors a very good piece of bowling on the turning pitch. next match i will be changing my bowlers around. man of the match was B.Johnson.

nsw played yorkshire in what was a ca cup final replay from last season. yorskshire batted first and was resticted to 186 with some good bowling performances. g mcgrath the pick with 3 and all other bowlers chipping in. last years star with the ball macgill took 2.

chasing a medioka total nsw batting not to the best of the sides efforts, with new comer b lara the only reall stand out with 93. b haddin and lara put on a good second wicket stand before haddin went for 57. m bevan was restricted to 20odd and nsw would take the honours and win by 4 wickets.

not a convincing win but good to get the points and get of to a good start.

State Vice-Captain
Yorkshire started the season like they finished.
The predicted team to take relegation honours started true

Bowled out for 186 was shocking. The only batsmen that looked good was a bowler a great 50 from white.
Fitzgerald gone first ball. And the two highest average in my team failed.
Hoggard was the outstanding bowler but a 93 from Lara rapped it up for the blues.

Next week is SA who also came off a bit of a hiding so we will see what happens.

In Reply the Bulls Past the Total in the 43 over for the lose of 6 wickets..Another New singing N.Hussain top Scored with 93*,It was a bit strange seeing the score 1/12 after hayden was caught for 5. Cricketer Of The Year
South Australia vs Mumbai

This game was billed as the match of the round but unfortunatley the pressure placed on the young Redbacks team was to much to handle as they were thoroughly outclassed by the strong Mumbai line-up...

Mumbai won the toss and elected to have 1st use of what looked to be a very bowler friendly wicket.
A 63 run opening stand from Rookie/Captain Trent Darden, and GKA Kumar got Mumbai off to a perfect start, but the loss of Kumar for 27 started a regular fall of wickets, in which the only man to stand tall was the captain Darden, who played a innings which showed experience beyond his years to help his side rattle up a competitive total of 9/253.
For the Redbacks the wickets were shared but the performances were nothing to write home about.

In reply the South Australian's looked very mentally under-prepared as they struggled to accomodate the underated Mumbai attack.
Wickets fell at regular intervals with only Captain Darren Lehmann and newcomer VVS Laxmann looking half comfortable both recording 30's...
The difference for the visitors, the bowling of R.Powar who returned figures of 4/12 from his 3 overs.

After the match Redbacks Manager Brendon Goff told a packed press conference "the boys were very mentally unprepared for this game" and that "Mumbai wanted the win more".

Goff also promised that next week would be a different story saying, "The attitudes of a few guys here will be given a stern look at, some expect that they are here on a holiday camp, but that will soon be knocked out of them..."

Despite his stern words Goff also praised his opposing manager saying "Sriram has done a great job with this side, he has toughened them up mentally and they will be a force in both comps this season"

So to next week when the Redbacks take on the boys from Yorkshire in the 1st ever 4 day games..
Once again the redbacks are hot favourites and are very keen this week to live up to expectations...

Stay tuned for the team to be announced later....
