Road to the Ashes 2021/22

Stokes and Archer are big holes at any time but especially for this tour. Might have to settle for a 3-0 win instead of the whitewash I was expecting.
you migrated to australia, when did that happen!?

So how about the Aust pace attack? Is Starc a first choice anymore? Its about time Neser gets a game.
Whilst it's true that if Neser was English he would have over 500 test wickets, he still doesn't warrant a test spot here. He isn't quick enough and is too conditions-dependent. Would rather Patto in for Starc, though tbf to the latter, at least he always tours and doesn't pull the bullshit "I'm a family man doing it tough so can't make it, sorry.... Oh look, the IPL unicorn!" bullshit plenty of others do.

Bairstow is just utter crap really. Genuinely think a mediocre random county player like Brett D'Oliviera say, would score more runs. Apparently scoring a few 30s in a home series buys you an Ashes ticket these days...
The squad definitely needs more Worcestershire players, you're right.

They've selected the wrong J Leach as well. They should have picked Joe Leach not Jack Leach. He's like Darren Stevens except worse with the bat, worse with the ball and looks less friendly.

And yet he still gets glowing commendations in the English press for those 30s, so he won't be dropped.

Pretty much my thoughts exactly. Neser would be very much in the picture if this was an away Ashes, but for home decks I would always look for someone with a bit more cutting edge. So basically whoever is bowling better out of Starc and Patto would be my choice

Jhye Richardson may have also been someone worth considering, but not until he actually plays some FC cricket. Can't pick someone unless they can prove they won't be gassed after half a dozen overs

I'll be pretty pissed if some completely anonymous JAMODI ends up ****ing the best fast bowling prospect we've had come through in like a decade.

Reece Topley would have been my bolter. Very tall, left-arm, hits the deck hard. Injury prone for sure, but feel he could have made a big impact. Could potentially be coming into his peak years too

I probably would've gone for Parkinson. What's a disastrous tour of Australia without debuting a meme leggie in a dead rubber?

Indeed! Scott Borthwick anyone?

In all seriousness, it really is a bland squad. An apt analogy could be that of an ageing rock star who plays the same set every night with nothing enticing or risque for his new fans. Feels like this squad announcement

Topley's domestic season wasn't all that notable. Mahmood and Carse had much better seasons and they're quicker. I didn't think we'd see anything groundbreaking but I'm pretty surprised Mahmood was left out.

It's such a bland selection and no doubt that lack of Stokes encouraged them to play it even safer than they otherwise would. Hence we have Bess in the 'spinner who can bat role'. Overton's the most ugh pick, no way he would have been picked if he couldn't bat a bit, his bowling offers nothing that Robinson doesn't do better - and Woakes fills the same role (though Root hates Woakes apparently).

I wouldn't have taken Parkinson either, but it's worth pointing out that he's just crossed 100 wickets and is averaging 23 and a half. Can't remember any England spinners going that well outside of Somerset recently, and especially leg spinners. Absolutely no way Root could handle him properly though, how the hell England thrashed SL in SL will remain a mystery to me, as when I've watched Root to me it seems he thinks that spinners are the bowlers you use to fill in time when the pace bowlers aren't on.

Robinson will probably be rested at some point though
Eh, if there's any who'll need resting it'll be one of the old firm (whether they will is a different question) and Woakes is still there. They could have taken someone else a bit less bland.

If they wanted less bland they'd have left Jimmy back home.

Re.Topley yeah Starfighter his figures weren't overly impressive. Just feel he has the attributes to succeed in Australia, similar to Tremlett really. Also left armers these days are so in vogue and can make a point of difference to an attack. You need to get Smith and Labuschagne out of their comfort zone and they have been troubled by left armers in the past (Wagner especially)
