Road to IPL 2009.

These Ambanis have enough money for an entire luxury apartment block, a private jet for themselves and even a flight for Dwayne Bravo on that jet. These amounts are peanuts for them.
Mate during an auction every franchise only has US $ 2m to work with, so no matter how rich they might be, they all are on the same level playing field during the auctions.

That's why i seriously don't understand KKR's stupid decision to buy Mortaza instead of a Flintoff or KP, since KKR only brought one player, they could have easily gone for one of the big fish.

Hey guys, can anyone tell me what the player price means, e.g. if Pietersen got paid 1.55 million, does that mean he gets paid that amount for the 2009 IPL only and the price resets every year? Or is it that amount every year for the rest of his IPL career?

That's the amount he'll earn for playing entire IPL, every year, for rest of his contract period, ie, 3 years I think.

He has to play all the 14 games to get that full amount. Otherwise the amount will be proportionately paid according to the matches played by him. i.e, if he plays only 7 matches, then 0.77 Million dollars will be paid.

I think the contracts that were given this year are for two years. As far as I know, all the contracts end at the end of next year. Three year contracts given last year, and the two year contracts given this year.

Although Mortaza opens up the market into neighboring Bangladesh.

The IPL, its not really about cricket.
Could have easily bought either Ashraful or Shakib for that purpose, but shelling that much cash on Mortaza is simply ridiculous.

These are the foreign players KKR have atm:

1.Gayle
2.Ponting
3.Dussey
4.Mendis
5.McCullum
6.Henriques
7.Mortaza
8.Hodge

With Gul and Akthar gone, KKR would have been so much better off either going for an all-rounder like Flintoff, or a bowler like Mills or someone else, Mortaza at that price range, is simply unbelievable.

What is the deal with this icon player thing, i think its really unfair to force this whole icon player thing on the franchise, thoughts? If anything, the players themselves should be annoyed. Tendulkar would have fetched more than he did in an option auction, for example.

It's not forced, they have a choice on who to pick and whether to pick them. In the end, the Mumbai franchise doesn't want Sachin Tendulkar playing for Rajasthan, with good reason.

Do the icon players have a 3 year contract too? ie. will they become free agents after next year?

bangalore were in serious trouble even before the 1st auction because they had to choose 2 players in dravid (icon) and kumble who were not good enough for odis let alone t20s-they still havent recovered from that disaster and it may take them 2 or 3 years more to form a core group of indian players

I think each franchise has the option to designate an Indian player of their choosing to be the franchise player. So they can pick a new player, or stick with the current player.

Indian players are worth more though because of the way the teams are set up, in that you have to play 7 Indian players.
