I can definatly see him retiring from ODI cricket after the WC, but i would be very suprised if he does'nt fight tooth and nail to be there in 2013 for the back to back Ashes series.

Makes you wonder whether this is Ponting being told he is retiring after world cup rather than him stating he is.

Well, bittersweet end it is then. On one hand, Ponting's test career probably got a boost with this 100, although for all reasons, his ODI career should be dead. But the champion he is, has signed off in style. As always, brilliant but second to Sachin

No. Don't open new can of worms.

If he is gonna leave I am seriously going to miss him. Seriously.
Among the best captains, fielders and #3 bat.

I just hope both of Ponting and Tendulkar(we can't hesitate to bring him in Ponting thread) don't retire at the same time. It would be to hard to take.

The last vestige of the old guard. Scoring when it matters - the true sign of a champion.

TBF if he'd scored against Pakistan, there's a good chance we wouldn't have had to come up against India in the quarters.

Erm, I am talking about knock-out games. By that token every game in the group stage is somewhat of a must-score game.

I am glad to notice that you have extended your statistical criteria to (lost) Quarter Finals. Earlier it used to be limited to World Cup finals only.

This.

Scored over half his runs for the tournament in this innings. Credit to him for it though.

Good try, but no. Scoring in WC final > scoring in WC quarter.

And, scoring runs when your team's elimination is on the line > scoring runs when everybody else in your team is securing your team's position anyway.

That's why I'll always laud players like Bevan, Warne, Richards, etc, who for me were truly special players. They make a good side great and achieve things that will forever live in the memory.

Maybe I am being a bit nostalgic but without Ponting there today we would have been embarrassed. With him, we put up a close fight.

Great knock by Ponting today. Looking at his injuries and the fact that he has nothing further to accomplish in ODI cricket, I don't think he should prolong his ODI career any further. Won't rule out a late-career resurgence in Tests just yet. He will have to grind out a few more knocks like today for the "swagger" to come back properly.

I agree. In ODI, the man has achieved everything one can ever hope to achieve.

I wouldn't mind so much if he retires from ODI/T20 and chooses to focus on tests. This should allow him to play 1-2 years extra in tests.

Though Aussie don't have any decent replacement for #3 spot.

Unless he has a serious ambition in playing in the next WC, I'd hope he would retire so that he could play longer in Tests.
