Quotas to be introduced for Proteas
2016-07-26 13:20

Cape Town - The board of directors of Cricket South Africa (CSA) has approved in principle the decision to introduce targets for all national teams.

This means that a quota system would be introduced for the Proteas, with CSA yet to determine the exact amount of players of colour required.

The system implemented in domestic cricket last season stipulated that all franchise teams field a minimum of six players of colour in their starting XIs, while three players were required to be black African.

“In the past we had never set targets in our national teams but with changing circumstances we feel it is essential to move with the times,” commented CSA president and chairperson of the board, Chris Nenzani.

“The precise targets will depend on work to be undertaken by relevant committees to determine what is realistic and sustainable. This will be announced in due course,” he added. “We will aim to achieve our targets over the course of the year and not on a match by match basis.”

Well, they're just confirming what has been the de facto policy for some time now.

Let's hope it's done relatively sensibly or SA cricket is, perhaps not heading down the path of Zimbabwe cricket, but certainly of West Indies cricket.

Yeah, this isn't really news, unless the targets are beyond what's been in place anyway.

There is a whole big difference between having internal targets and announcing to the whole world that you won't pick your best team. This will kill cricket in any meaningful in SA. This doesn't just hurt the white player, any non white player so selected will always be painted as undeserving of his spot.

Of course this is totally against ICC regulations but as we have seen with pakistan and sri lanka the ICC won't implement their own rules when it comes to political interference. Just like their buddies at World Rugby they lack the political will to do the right thing. For all their other problems we know for a fact Fifa would have thrown the ban hammer on this.

Cricinfo menitoned 7.
Sports Minister wants 7.
Which is 60%,so I guess its 7.
Expect 7 for domestic comps this year too.

So wait, what's the difference this time? The sports minister has been saying this for years now...... for both cricket and rugby

Up till now its been unofficial guidelines, to try get at least 4 players of colour in the team. However a 'target' is now being produced increased to 6 (possible 7) and its is more open than just behind the scenes guidelines. How sustainable is debatable, how enforcible is debatable, and how flexible is debatable. Also there is probably going to be a distinction made between 'black' and 'coloured'.

If this was a pure CSA decision based on cricketing grounds with the belief that it will enhance cricket in the future and bring through more players of colour then I would have little problem with it, but it is largely coming from higher level political pressure because we are having government elections soon, and the upper echelons wants some easy to point at 'victories' for the masses.

Rob still seems eulhlrically influenced from the event monday night.

Didnt csa have to force ab, dale and faf to attend?
Do you mean they were obliged to attend like any senior worker when you are contracted to a company, to a do some glad handing... yes... they probably new this before they even left for the CPL.

Think its the end of Steyn and Morkel frankly, maybe even Faf.
Its the way it works.
Steyn no... Morkel, probably, Faf unlikely.

Based on our last test... Morkel and Abbott are likely to lose out. Ensuring places for Philander and Rabada (both would be first choice anyway). For the batting, it may mean Duminy retains his spot and Cook may get the shaft for another player of colour... but we can wait and see. Right now my first choice team has 6 players of colour in it.... the problem is depth if there are injuries.

Steyn has hardly played in 12 months, his pace is down and so is his form, apart from CPL,expect 1 of the coloured bowlers in the A team 2 replace him.
There will only be 4 whites available, and 4 black players will be picked,so more likely a bowler than a batsmen.
Yeh Cook gone.

What are you basing any of that on? Those are pretty much facts conjured up through pure speculation. Even at franchise level none of this has occurred?Steyns been injured but everybody still accepts him as SA`s premier pace-man, we have not seen enough of his bowling to know what his pace or form is like in FC cricket?

Goodness!! This sounds absolutely terrible. Here I was looking forward to a solid 3-4 years of test cricket for Cook.

That's pretty much worst case scenario (baring Amla, AB and Steyn retiring!). I expect the quota to be 6 for the international side with at least 2 'black' players. Franchise cricket is a different matter, but I can see us increasing to 8 franchises. The actual percentage and numbers for this have not been communicated in any way so all this is pure speculation. Is their pressure yes; Should we be throwing a tantrum yet, no because we do not know the specifics. In a years time if we have to pick the team from the 2nd division to meet quotas then we can all have a tantrum.

speaking as a person with little idea of safrican politics any more than four or five quota players is equity gone horrendously wrong

surely they could so a better job at grassroots levels and domestic levels: arbitrarily picking a player of colour due to their colour for the international team helps literally nobody, and if there are six players of colour that should be picked for the national side then that's not because of quotas, as much as firdose moonda's confirmation bias says it is

If only four whites can play for the Proteas, it's a bit of a problem.

That means only four out of De Villiers, Faf, Steyn, Morkel, QDK, Cook, and Elgar, can get a gig. And that's not including guys on the fringes, like Harmer and Abbott.

As Shady Slim says, work has to be done at the grassroots, but that's far too hard - that's why we are having this top down transformation, which really doesn't help anyone.

even having 1 quota player is still too much.

It's nothing short of racial discrimination
