Kohli has had an 11 year/100 test career averaging 50. Ponting at the same stage of his career was averaging 60. Kohli has played in a significantly harder era for batting, but it doesn’t make up for a 10 point difference.
Only the last 3ish years have been hard for batters. Before that it was still a roady era. I think it mostly cancels out with the '90s.

It is still legendarily bad. 3 years without a century, third worst average of any batsman in the world, failing to cash in at home against soft attacks. Not even old man Dravid when he kept getting bowled wasn't that bad. Even terminal declines are better statistically.
No, even factoring that in. It's a tough era to bat in. It's not mid-20s bad.
Not really given that there was a lockdown plus all trolling targeting against his family, especially his newborn daughter. It's natural it's gonna affect his game.

Plus Amla and Ponting had a similar decline if not worse.

Yeah, 2018 is when the averages really started dropping although there were a few nations that were still challenging to bat in before then.

Kohli needs to stop the steep decline in his batting average. Otherwise his career record will resemble Cook.

I used to think so given Dravid averaging in excess of 50 outside Asia and Ponting's India struggles, but I find now that Ponting has very few caveats outside failing in one country. Dravid vs Sangakkara is more debatable.
Ponting away average is 10 point lower than his home average.

How many points does it make up for?

Ponting is alone in that middle tier below Lara/Sachin but above Dravid, Kallis and Sanga.
Where would Steve Waugh feature?

I know he debuted and retired slightly earlier but his success had plenty of overlap with some of these guys, especially Sachin and Lara

I know it's about Test batting.

I know Ponting is bit better bat than Kohli but not remotely close is an strecth.

In his prime he betweeb 2016-2019 he scored 4208 @67. That's close to Ponting's prime and he played in a more batting friendly era.

Kohli now looks bad because his decline coincided with the worst batting era since the 50s

I did say Ponting was more talented. Kohli is not even the most talented guy in his team.
That’s not even remotely close to pontings prime

Yeah i loved Steve Waugh. He's in the dravid-Kallis tier for me.

Actually Kohli has spent more Test above 900 ICC ratings points than Ponting. So this not being remotely close is incorrect. What has hurt Kohli has that in last 3 years , his average has dropped from 53 to 49.5 ( a very steep decline) .

Ponting has a very clean distribution in terms of both opponents and conditions except India away, whereas Dravid struggled in three different countries and against two different opponents.
If Dravid average of 41.64 in Australia is bad then Ponting average of 41.79 in England is also bad.

Context:
Ponting was solid on all four tours of England. His lowest average in a series there was 39.89.
Dravid had one big tour against a depleted Australian attack and struggled in the other three, also struggling in a one-off Test there for ROW. He averaged 15.50 and 24.50 on two of his tours there.

Ponting was far more consistent in England than Dravid was in Australia.

Alternative context: Dravid manned up and went big in Aus to interrupt the single longest winning streak of any team ever. WAG, no comparison with whoever the other guy was*

*Ya, Ponting was much better in England, point well made.
