the aussies miss ponting the batsman and ponting the slip fieldsman not ponting the captain, all he does as captain is do what the people in the aussie dressing room tell him to

Ponting as captain is doing a thankless job, because if he does well everyone would say that he is leading such a strong side that even a Baboon could captain this side with success.

And if he doesn't do well as a captain then everyone would say how a pathetic captain is he to not even be able to guide such a strong side with good results.

He is no genius like Steve Waugh, but his absence as a leader hurts the team IMO.

Demonmail4, if the people in the dressing room are so good with their ideas and tactics, why do they fail so miserably when Ponting is not captaining the side and they get the chance to captain the side.

I think Australia miss Ponting both as a batsman and a captain when he's not playing. His batting, as we all know, is excellent, and he's in supreme form at the moment. No one can doubt that an Australian batting order is considerably weaker without Ponting coming in after an early wicket, a late wicket or a wicket anytime during the innings.

His captaincy is also missed, but maybe not as much. There is no doubt he is a great captain, but whether his captaincy wins matches on its own is doubtful. Essentially, Ponting is picked in the team for his batting and not completely on his skills as leader of the Australian cricket team. Tubby Taylor was only in the team for his captaincy during that terrible form slump, and therefore his leadership would have been the only thing missed in his absense. When Ponting is rested, injured or not playing, his batting in particular is sorely missed, while his captaincy is not missed so much due to the leadership capabilities of Gilchrist, Hussey, Clarke etc.

EDIT: Argh, stupid random title that I don't want and is irrelevant to what I say in the post.

Ponting as a captain has long been over-patronised.

He has his poor games (the 438 game) but for the most part criticism aimed his way, especially from British journalists, tends towards the ridiculous and my only assumption can be that it's as an outlet for perceived hammerings on the end of Allan Border, Mark Taylor and Stephen Waugh.
Yeah, agree fully.
