Ponting better than Sachin : Ian Chappell

No, I'd rather you try to argue it and see how far you can dig. Because siding with your point makes my argument even stronger; as Ricky's record is still superior because overall he averages 47 against India, (79 in Aus and 21 in India). But no, I wouldn't begin to use that as reason because it pretty much ignores what an average of 50 or more actually signifies and what an average of 50 or more against a country usually entails, compared to one of 40.

Ponting and Tendulkar are close enough that I don't see what's wrong with a commentator holding the opinion that either is better than the other.

For me, I think Ponting is better, but perhaps that's because it's coincidence that I've been watching TV when he's played some of his most critical innings, and so they stick in my mind, which is not the case so much for Tendulkar.

Why? If anything, you have more reason to fail away from home than at home. That's why having high away averages is impressive.
ponting has failed in india and done well against them only at home... sachin has scored 3 hundreds against SA in SA and failed only at home against them.... doesnt that make sachin's record against SA better than ponting's against india?

i am getting caught in this debate...

this is a seaming wicket. the ball is new; four slips and two gullies in place. and the star bowler pitches the ball up around off stump, just a shade short of good length. the ball moves off the pitch a few inches outside the off stump and continues to moves towards first slip. i should shoulder arms and leave the ball untouched. this is a good debate for me to not get involved in. :)

Proof to never listen to a word that d***head Ian Chappell says.
In future Ian Chappell, don't state your opinion because Josh2053115 is raging.
Think you can do that for Josh2053115?
Thanks

God forbid a former test captain expresses his opinion.

No it doesn't make it better because Sachin didn't do well against them anywhere, neither home or away. And worst compared to worst, do you think averaging 21 and 28 is really different now? What would you think of averaging 39 and 79 then? In one instance, both are pitifully bad. In the other, Ponting is awesome and Tendulkar not even average. That's why Ponting averages 47 overall against India and Tendulkar only 35 against S.Africa. I don't think this point is very debatable at all.

Only the Test in Australia is an example of wresting the initiative. The two on either side were forlorn knocks which merely fought against the tide as his team were clearly going down around him (not that these aren't better than falling over with the rest, but there's no way they were knocks that were ever going to turn the tide). The lattermost two are examples of what I was talking about - ramming home the advantage that others had already gained. In the middle-order, ABdeV specialises at this, which is why I consider him merely a pretty good middle-order batsman. I much prefer him as an opener, and refuse to label it anything other than ludicrous that a succession of middle-order batsmen are being shoehorned in to open while stubbornly refusing to put ABdeV up to his best position.

Chappell says currently Ponting is better than Sachin. Why is that even an issue?
Because it's very debateable that he is. In the last 2-and-a-half years years, as I say, there's precious little between them.

I consider otherwise, TBH, though as I've already said it isn't illogical to suggest Ponting has been > Tendulkar in the last 2-and-a-half years.

It isn't ? Actually in last 2 and half years Tendulkar is Clearly ahead of Ponting.

There are quite a few players better than Tendulkar, of course the Tendulkar fan boys cant accept this so dont even bother trying to explain to them.

Where are your numbers coming from?
am just guesstimating from the difference in aggregate averages for respective eras and the individual averages of the players in discussion.

off topic question: is lara a great batsman despite playing in a weak team or because of it? in other words, would he have played with more freedom if he were part of a more successful unit or would he have lost interest and wasted away his talent playing careless cricket? both sachin and ricky have demonstrated so many times that they could score bucketful of runs irrespective of their team's position in the game. wonder how lara would have done if he had played in steve waugh's team.

Ponting was better from 2003 to 2007, no doubt.

I think Tendulkar has been better than Ponting since then though. I'm sure that is statistically backed up in tests and ODIs too. I really cbf.

Just some stats for recent years. Since July 2007 Tendulkar has played 22 tests at an average of 50. In that same period Ponting has played 26 tests at an average of 44. So not much to choose but Sachin has the edge.

Incidentally Ponting's peak period was from 2002 to 2006 ( not 03-07 as I had mentioned earlier). He averaged 72 over those years.
