Bradman for me, they clashed in 1938 when Bradman had a poor unbalanced attack and in 1946/47 when Bradman won easily.

Those captained by Hammond were unimpressed especially on the 1946/47 tour, most rating him the worst Test captain they played under.
I heard that Hammond was no where near the same standard of captain post-war that he was pre-war, but as this is a 1920-39 XI, the 1946-47 results should be considered irrelevant ;)

Fair enough, but I can't remember reading anything about him being a good captain before or after the war. Not rated too highly by any of the Gloster players he captained

One comment was 'He was a great batsman, but a complete bastard'

don bradman. good enough to lead his team from a 0-2 position to a series winning 3-2 result in 1936-37. i am certain i wont see too many five test series where that would happen before i die. also he continued the ruthless aussie traddition of winning at all costs without employing unfair tactics (probably started by warwick armstrong) which later continued under benaud, ian chappell, border, taylor, waugh and, now, ponting.

this team is still short of one bowling allrounder though. hopefully the next team will have one of rhodes, noble, faulkner etc.

Don't know if the captain vote is still going, but Bradman. For all his personal clashes with some of his players (often over-exaggerated), he was rated very highly as a captain by all those who played under him. Hammond wasnot, as far as I've ever read or heard, ever considered an outstanding captain, and I'm frankly astonished he's gotten such a percentage of the votes so far. If it was Jardine up against The Don, I could understand it, but Hammond's not even close.

i agree sean. may be celebrate writers (and cricketers) such as oreilly and fingleton have been influential in many forming a negative opinion on don. though they have written only great things about his cricketing ability some of their opinions on his personality are not too far from blatant character assassination.

I think it would be good to finish this off by doing the pre world war 1 team. Seeing as though aussie tragic and bagapath aren't as active any more I'm happy to run it. I'll try and get the openers poll up soon.

Would support the construction of the pre-WWI team, looking forward to what the team will look like.

Jeez, not much of an explanation from him either. Hope it was just that he had too much other stuff to do, and not because he was unhappy here - he was a really good contributor.

Here's the list I've come up with so far with help from the stats bagapath provided earlier. I've set the minimum amount of tests at 10 but there may be exceptions due to the limited amount of tests played. If anyone thinks of someone to be added to the list just let me know. Some of the batsmen like Fry and Hayward could be either openers or middle order batsmen. I've put them in the openers category for now.

Faulker the obvious choice for all rounder, while Ranji's numbers are also very impressive. All the bowlers look pretty good too, a lot of legendary names in their who don't receive much recognition thesedays.

I've added a few more cricketers to the list. I'll start the polls tomorrow to give everyone the chance to add to the list or dispute a players category.

Any chance of Armstrong being put in as an allrounder? I'd vote for Faulkner over him, but I reckon he deserves to be included.
