IndeedIt is quite extraordinary the lengths people are willing to go to to make their arguments stick.
Saying the Ashes is an 8 test match series must surely be one of the longest.

au contraire , he played very well when the chips were down . Just didn't capitalise too much when the going was easy, even more so than laxman
...
so does sanga's records in Ind,Eng,SA,WI
...
pretty bad record yeah. but 8 of the 12 times in SL , was dismissed by pacers. Did fairly well in India .. Should've been closer to averaging 45 IMO
...
not great, but very good, perhaps should be averaging closer to 50
...
LOL, hell no. More the inability to convert 50s into 100s . Doesn't make that much hay while the sun shines
...
true, but I was referring more to his bowling
...
not an ATG, but better than what his average suggests
...
not really. Just dumb handling from Pak selectors
A career of three parts IMO,flintoff - Only good for two seasons. Otherwise ordinary.
Get out.Just to name a few
Cairns, Pollock, Watson, Kallis > Flintoff
19 tests, 36 innings, 2 N/O, average of 49.88 even though he only has two hundreds to his name (though he has 14 50s). That's phenomenally consistent and consistently frustrating.Misleadingly high or low? (As in reflection of ability)
I definitely think that you have to more or less ignore everything before he started opening.
Averaged more than Sachin until recent tour in SAF. And we are looking at an average of 39. Every other place it is 30+. So in a nutshell, equal records. Still it doesn't make KP > Sanga.so does sanga's records in Ind,Eng,SA,WI
Agreed. But his stats are perfectly Ok for a SC pacer.true, but I was referring more to his bowling
Part of the problem was dumb handling. But was sorted out and lacked second line of defence.not really. Just dumb handling from Pak selectors
sachin's avg in SA was slightly higher ... Anyways just one century in those 4 countries for sanga ( five if you count bangla ! ) doesn't make for pretty reading !Averaged more than Sachin until recent tour in SAF. And we are looking at an average of 39. Every other place it is 30+. So in a nutshell, equal records. Still it doesn't make KP > Sanga.
slightly worse than they should be.. should've been closer to 27/28 than 30 IMO ..Agreed. But his stats are perfectly Ok for a SC pacer.
disagree, he still had the ability to vary the flight and deceive batsmen , even with batsmen reading his doosra betterPart of the problem was dumb handling. But was sorted out and lacked second line of defence.
If both were in top form, then no doubt I'd have KP, current form easily Sanga, but I fancy KP to build on what he did in the Ashes this year. This past year he's averaged 50, so he's getting back to something like form, but still a way to go.I agree that they aren't comparable on current form. I'd also agree that Pietersen hasn't done justice to his potential, but let us not pretend that there is some huge gulf between them when it comes to overall careers.
I'd say even in the third part of his career, as you put it, Flintoff very rarely bowled poor and most of the time very good, it was his batting that struggled, when England started to depend on him more and more to lead the attack.A career of three parts IMO,
first part, not yet that ready for test cricket. Pretty ordinary
second part - excellent
third part: due to injuries ordinary, but excellent in patches
