Players with full careers who would have had better records in other teams

Atherton's career minus his last 3 ashes series is probably an average of 40+

McGrath just destroyed his reputation and his stats

34 innings against Australia featuring McGrath, and he was dismissed in single figures 18 times from them. Zero centuries

Having to play Australia so much is probably an undervalued factor in 90s English cricketers stats tbh

As a team they were still pretty bad even against everyone else though from what I know

Atherton's serious back problem - ankylosing spondylitis - is a bigger factor in his relatively low average IMO. If he didn't have the back issue he might have averaged 40+ even for England. To average what he did with that condition, against those attacks, was a great career really.
Agree about the back condition. That definitely exaceprated his decline. It was a very unforgiving set of circumstances during the back end of his career.

They were still bad, but playing Australia so much did them no favours. And then all the long series' against the Windies and South Africa too. Poor old Atherton.

He managed to give a fair bit back to SA and Windies though. The 185* and 98* not out against Donald and Pollock, and 4 tons against Ambrose and Walsh

He had virtually no ashes success once McGrath began his test career

Yes. Always did well against SA and had a great tour of WI in his prime. Good series against them at home in 95 too.

Initially did well in the Ashes, then McGrath came along...

Ponting in India. His stats would be more honest and he would have played more meaningful cricket in a shorter career.

Yeah just had a look, he had a really solid '93 ashes, getting 6 fifties. Nearly scored as many runs as what he got in '97, '98/99, and '01 ashes combined
