Root also hits counterattacking fifties in tough conditions in low scoring games that are pretty valuable.
He actually hits hundreds in those games a lot of the time. 2015 Ashes, in SA etc. Why he still ought to be rated so highly.

it doesn't read that way tbf. aesthetics over output sounded a lot like you were calling him a world class ian bell, where he looks great but only good for like a 70 or something.

edit - looking at the poll, i'm surprised so few people have voted. kohli seems to have pulled the most global voting base
It's not so much that, it's more than people were literally calling him the best of the four a few years back on the basis of how he looked.

Which IMO really wasn't that unreasonable considering his results at that time. I don't think it was spurious at all for anyone to make a case for any of them being the best. Thus the reason for the poll, I guess.

I still don't know why we're having to defend people's ratings of KW when he didn't even win the poll.

The ratings weren't so much spurious as the reasons being given. People were really going over the top, and the poll shows that IMO.

When they were as even as the four were at the time of the poll, aren't you going to separate them based on something minor or gut feel? Kane didn't even win the poll, Kohli did.

You're posting like you have a big fat chip on your shoulder which is weird because you're not that kind of person.

Steady on, it was a one line post. People have then turned that to something way bigger.

I mean, I just think that people were placing too much weight on the way his technique looked, and the aesthetic quality of his strokeplay. That's all.

Maybe I would have gotten less of a reaction if I really did post about it like I had a chip on my shoulder  A few people have really reached and gone to extremes in how uncharitable they've been in their interpretations of that post, which I obviously would have predicted but oh well.

Hahahah, Kiwis hating on Spark..
Ha, no, not at all - and I hope it's not coming across that way. I always rate his posts, and of course he's entitled to his opinion. It's just a bit strange that KW finishing second in this big four poll (three and a half years ago) is seen as the anomaly in the results.

None of this would've happened if the thread was shut down immediately once the word 'fabbie' was used in the poll

I really am at odds with how to value Root. Sure, he doesn't seem to go on and make hundreds like the rest, but he scores lots more 50's more reliably. If you had 6 roots in your team you would be pretty hard to beat. Throw in the tail and you'd probably always be ending up near 400 per innings. Root's 50's are usually worth a partnership of 100 unless the other batsmen are failing. Are people just getting upset because you can not cheer him on due to the tradition being it is cheers for 100. Why not cheers for two 50's?

Obviously Smith rules, but how can you split the other three except for cheers factor (which doesn't win games)?

Code:
[B]Name InningsAve MatchAvg 100s 50s[/B]
Smith 63.55 97.93 23 22
Kohli 53.75 83.61 20 15
Root 52.73 86.81 13 36
Willi' 50.62 82.76 17 26
If you allocate a cheer for 100 as double a cheer for a 50 (seems about right listening to crowds) then we have
Code:
Smith 68 cheers
Kohli 55 cheers
Root 62 cheers
Willi' 60 cheers
So help me.... What is the problem with Root? In runs per match and cheers per match, he is second best.
Your crowds are bastards for not cheering 150, 200 or 250.

All three of them have a fair case for number 2 now. Kohli had some catching up to do. Williamson may as well not matter though since he doesn't play tests anymore.
