Also the fact Strauss doesn't have as many ready-made replacements..
KP doesn't either. Strauss, Cook, KP, Bell and Collingwood have been the backbone of our batting lineup for the past 5/6 years, with the exception of Trescothick there's no-one in the county system who's got any decent Test experience or who has been relentlessly prolific with the bat for 3 or 4 years. There's a few promising young batsmen but there's no-one in England not currently in the Test side who can count themselves unlucky that they're not playing Test cricket.

Strauss has been in worse form over the past year and keeps getting himself out to left arm seamers. Where's the relentless discussion about his form?
I agree and mentioned it in the tour thread. I'm not saying Strauss' position in the team should be debated but the amount of bad press KP gets and especially that first dismissal in Cardiff, where some people were questioning his position and saying he should be dropped, yet he actually averages a little more, the last 2 years, is a double standard

The thing with KP is his best innings have generally been when he has been cautious at the start of his innings (once he gets his suicidal single to get off 0) building an innings and taking control once he has around 30 off 60 balls. In the last few years he seems to be trying to tee off too soon before he is set and geting out cheaply. I guess he needs to go back to basics.
Said the same thing a few times, it's almost at times as if he's forgot to time is innings properly. Like you say, sometimes he would start really slow score, like 10 off 30, then the more he gets in, the more aggressive he gets. IMO since the first injury he's hasn't looked consistent and because he must hear all the talk about him, you almost get the impression, he tries to silence doubters from the very first ball, which can lead to trouble.
I think the problem this test series, he's hardly batted, since he had the operation, he had 1 county game and a 2nd XI game, in which he got a few runs but nothing big enough, to get you back in to form and this has been is problem since he suffered his fist injury. He came on the SA tour, straight back from surgery & injury and struggled.

When it comes to form, people take it easier on captains and openers so if you're both, you're going to get a lot more leeway than someone coming in at 2-down or below with no additional responsibilities to using your bat.

If Strauss is putting up similar numbers to KP, that should reflect much worse on KP than on Strauss unless they're averaging in the 20's or something.

I have more doubts about Strauss than KP. He seems to have forged his reputation on the 2009 Ashes and with every passing series that starts to look more and more the exception rather than the rule. Anyone bowling from the off side and moving the ball away gives him all kinds of trouble.

It's become a bit of an elephant in the room. Dropping him just isn't an option so it's better for everyone if they just don't mention that he isn't actually very good at the moment.

Yes of course but after the amount of bad press KP gets about form etc, you'd think someone would have mentioned Strauss' bad form, but they don't.

I'll bet if you looked at Strauss and.Pietersen's average, number of tons and dismissals to their achilles heel, they would have exceptionally similar numbers over the last 2 years.
