Ntini, Pollock, Kallis and Smith are all obviously justified selections. Gibbs and De Villiers are a bit more questionable I think, but De Villiers did score a century against England. Boucher was a poor pick.
I think you will find that De Villers and Gibbs made the sqaud cus of the lack of quality openers.

Of course, in isolation, you would not rate someone highly just because they have scored runs against Bangladesh. Where exactly did I say that? I merely said that when calculating averages, it is intellectually dishonest not to include all Test playing nations.
That would be true if they played at Test level (compared to other nations), but they play at FC level if that. As you see when you take out Banlgadesh matches his average drops by 15, which shows why people take it out.

Another interesting selection is Ashley Giles !! There's already 3 spinners in the selection, why a 4th spinner !! I dread to think Giles being the sole spinner for the World XI after the other 3 have dropped out through Injury or bad luck !! :D :D

My fear is these selections have been done with withdrawals and injuries in mind.

Don't be surprised if Smith and Gibbs open, with AB De Villiers at No.3 and Giles is the sole spinner , come Match day !! :D :D

I have to stand up for AB De V here; he's an outrageously gifted cricketer. He currently averages over 50 in tests (albeit from only 18 innings), is a more than competent wicket-keeper &, as evidenced by the 4th test v The Windies, can actually get reverse-swing from the old ball!

I am sure he is !! But guys like Fleming and Cairns have missed out here ! in that context I think his omission is lesser !!

I hope he maintains his same run of form against stronger opposition , then he would surely be as automatic as Kallis for the next World XI super series !!

Well, Andrew Strauss has been selected, on batting roughly as well against roughly the same opponents...

The only questionable selections, IMHO are Kevin Pietersen (for the ODIs) , :D Mark Boucher (for Both Tests and ODIs) , Andre Nel (How many bowlers do they need !! :D Its only 1 test of 6 days or is it a Timeless Test)

Pietersen has scored 3 ODI centuries against his own native SA and has played a total of 11 ODIs. And that has been seen to be enough for him to be selected ahead of players like Chris Cairns and Fleming !! :)

Besides, you say Tendulkar is out of form like it's some indisputable fact. One can only look at his most recent series against Pakistan, where he averaged 51.
One can only look at the World Ratings to see Mr Tendulkar down in 12th.

The top 3 are Dravid, Lara and Kallis but there's also Inzamam and Younis of middle order batsmen ahead of him.

So who would you pick then?

What about the mostoverhyped player in the World being in both forms for no apparent reason.

The world rankings are such accurate measure of a players' abilty. So the fact that Tendulkar has a better record aganist Australia then Kallis, Inzi and Younis wouldn't put him infront of all of them. The middle order when you consider aspect, not just current form, would be Lara, Tendulkar and Dravid.

The world rankings are a very good measure of form - and sorry but 12th doesn't get in ahead of 1st, 2nd or 3rd under any circumstances.

All I can say is Form is Temporary, Class is permanent. If you are referring to SRT he's class !! And Class will always come through against quality opposition as it will be in this instance against Australia.

If you are referring to VVS , I may agree with you, that he should not be there on form in last 2 years !! :D

No it isn't, it only takes in current form.

When you consider Kallis average aganist Australia he would never get infront of Tendulkar, or anyone with a record similar aganist Australia, regardless of how good his curent form is.

Pathan bowls brilliantly on subcontinental wickets that give him little assistance !! I will pick him ahead of Hoggard any day !! :)
