Phillip Hughes

International 12th Man
Don't think he has been overrated really. I think most are still taking a wait and see attitude with Hughes.

SA's pace attack is just about as good as it gets these days, but I was commenting more on the lines they bowled in those Hughes tons. Steyn bowled some menacing spells but the overall attack, especially Morkel, drifted wide or on the pads far too often. Hughes still played very well during the difficult spells, but the SA attack fed him far too many boundaries in that first ton. I'll admit I probably didn't watch enough of the second ton so I may have missed something. I'm excited about his talent and I'm not saying that he won't be a great cricketer for Australia, but it's not accurate to say he scored two tons against the best attack in the world, because they certainly didn't bowl like the best attack in the world.
I don't know, i think he makes a lot of balls look worse than they are. Back-of-a-length, just outside off stump isn't supposed to be a rank poor delivery, but he made width and clobbered them past point every single time. Players that are as good as he are outside off stump always make the bowling look shameful because anything remotely short with the slightest bit of width goes for four.

Let's see him score big runs against quality bowling before getting too excited ... SA bowled mainly crap throughout his tons in this series. Exciting prospect but a bit overrated perhaps.
You're right, we should wait and see how Hughes does in South Africa, which is statistically the hardest place in the world to open, against a South Africa side with the best pace attack in the world currently.

Wait a second...

If you can, read my post above for clarification.

Yeah - except your clarification is something along the lines of "they bowled crap to Hughes but ok to everyone else"....

As far as others saying he'll start to feel pressure to 'keep his wicket' - he's not a random slogger you realise? He actually plays defensive shots - just has an unorthodox technique on a couple of his shots.

Anyway, isn't his 75 in the second dig of the first test in SA exactly the type of innings beign talked about

Have no idea how they bowled to everyone else, but they gave Hughes far too many freebies in the ton-and-a-half that I watched. That's all I'm saying - they may be the best attack in the world bowling in the hardest place to open in the world, but they gifted him too many boundaries on that occasion. I've already acknowledged that I may have missed things about his batting because I didn't watch the entire series.
