Peak Sanga vs Peak Punter

He scored those runs in a much more bowler's friendly era, and at a time when all of Australia (2 tours), South Africa and England had very strong bowling attacks at home, more so than what Ponting or Sanga faced. Also, much tougher home conditions and to scored consistently everywhere. Ponting averaged 3 at the middle of his peak in India for ex. Balancing things, I don't think there are really many reasons to say his peak was definitively worse than Ponting's or Sanga's.

I mean, have you seen what other batsmen scored at around Ponting's golden run?? Dravid, Kallis, Hayden, Lara, Sehwag, Yousuf, all of them has such monster phases. To put it bluntly, 2000s was a much more batter friendly era than mid 10s.

Also, in Ponting's peak, between 2002-06; he scored 6141 @72.24; which after era adjustment; is tough to call superior.

Though, if you count his peak from '99, he scored between 1999-06, 8114 @63.43; which again, is comparable to Virat's peak between 2012-19, 7000 @57.43. Further, it includes Virat's mammoth efforts in Australia 2015 and SA 2013. Though, to be fair, it also has his England 2014, which was a massive failure, just better than Ponting's India 2001.

Most people don’t adjust for things like conditions and bowling attacks faced sadly.

Kohli plays his home games in conditions where Jadeja averages low 20s….imagine if he got to play his home games in Aus or Pak

Regarding Kohli's decline also, I think it's a little over exaggerated. He had 3 bad years after scoring @68 in 2019; and hardly any matches were played in 2020..... He had a bad phase of 20 games, and is scoring well since 2023 again.

I still think Kohli has to prove he's not in decline ..

2020-2022 is 20 tests without a hundred at an average of 26 is criminal for a top batsmen..

Also in 2023 we have to remember his two tons , one was in a high scoring draw vs Aus and the second was against a West Indies attack in decline (Gabriel close to retirement, Holder past his best, Alzarri Joseph not really great, no Motie ) ..

2020-2022 is 20 tests without a hundred at an average of 26 is criminal for a top batsmen..

Also in 2023 we have to remember his two tons , one was in a high scoring draw vs Aus and the second was against a West Indies attack in decline (Gabriel close to retirement, Holder past his best, Alzarri Joseph not really great, no Motie ) ..

The Border-Gavaskar series will reveal all.

Granted. But can't forget his 2023 SA tour. No tons, but very tough runs in 3 of his 4 innings, especially the 2nd innings of the 1st match. Imo, given his record in 2023 (yes, counting his WC form as well, given his struggle was in all formats), it's suffice to say he is back again.

Peak Smith was such a phenom really. I doubt anyone will match his peak anytime soon.

Went with Sanga here. I guess there isnot much to separate between the two.

People have to makeup their minds on Sanga's home pitches.

If they were featherbeds, then Murali has a peak that will take him even surpassing Marshall.
If they were dustbowls, then even Sanga's home pitches were also pretty difficult ones, and puts him way higher than Ponting's peak.
