Should've done a bus parade for that chess guy.
Hasn’t won yet. Has to beat Ding Liren yet. Plus everyone knows Magnus is still the best (he just chose not to defend his title), so he also has to beat Magnus in some form of tournament for the him to really cement his place in history. But it would be huge for him to beat Liren and he should absolutely get big accolades if that happens. That’ll be in November.

I play chess probably an hour a day and I suck very badly at it but follow it closely, so that’ll be a huge event in Singapore. Around the same time as the BG trophy!

I thought he beat Magnus?
he has beaten Magnus before in individual games but not in a world championship or an equivalent classical chess type tournament.

Herecently won the tournament for the right to challenge the existing champion (Ding Liren given Magnus declined to defend), which will take place in Singapore Nov-Dec of this year. He wasn’t the favorite to win that tournament but he played some wonderful games, and defended brilliantly for draws when he needed to.

If he wins against Liren, he’ll be the youngest chess champion in history. Most commentators think he hasn’t reached his ceiling yet so it’ll be an exciting next few years for him even if he doesn’t win.

Yeah Anand did so so much for chess, especially in India. I liken it to the effect that 1983 WC win had for cricket in India. I believe he was the first Indian to even achieve the rank of GM. Now there’s so many!
