One Day Round 6 Match Reports

Mr. P

International Vice-Captain
Well a crushing win for Somerset saw them move to the top of the division 4 table, which puts them in good stead to seal a second promotion in a row. Somerset leapfrogged Jamaica after the island side were brilliantly chased down by Mumbai.

Taking to the field against a side they were beaten by in the first round, only to win by forfeit, Somerset were looking to prove they could do better then a default victory. At the toss Donald was quick to get his side in to bat, however this looked a terrible mistake as his side slid to a miserable 5/118. Shane Bond was bowling at his best and managed to snare 2 wickets. Beasley was the lone batsman who stood up against the Surrey rampage, with a quick 55 from 45 deliveries.

At this point all the signs were not looking good for Somerset, but thanks to some brilliant lower order batting, they managed to not only make a competitive score, but went beyond that and set a daunting target of 346. A 109 run partnership started the proceedings, with YA Singh making 74, then Pothas (65*) and Maqbool (92) kicked on, batting superbly for an unbeaten 118 run stand.

Chasing down 345 was never going to be an easy task, but Surrey made a good fist of it, thanks largely to some absolute rubbish from Somersets 4D bowling ace B Collyer. After being plundered for 90 runs in his 10 overs, nearly a third of Surreys total, Collyer will almost certainly be removed from the OD side in weeks to come. Fortunately for Somerset, the carnage that came whenever Collyer released the ball was not enough to give Surrey a win. Although Denny (137) did his best, the 6 over spell of Maqbool (0/16) proved priceless. His economy spelled the difference between the two teams, in a superb all round day for the former Tamil Nadu star.

Speaking of Tamil Nadu, I was happy to see that they lost :D If they get relegated, they could be facing off against me next year. I would be f*cked, lol

WTF, OMFG!

ND have won their first one day game of the season after easily disposing of Tasmania. The Kiwi side are looking better by the week as they claimed their 3rd straight win in all competitions. Herath 3/33 and Holland 45 lead the way...

The win gives ND hope of avoiding relegation and with a game against Mashonaland coming up the loser is probably gone...

Glamorgan's bowlers still got raped even though I played only 4 specialist batsmen including a wicketkeeper.

Karnataka v Warwickshire

One Day leaders Karnataka were given a huge shock before finally overcoming Warwickshire in a high scoring game. Batting first, the Indians made 316-5 off their 50, with a vital 75 off 69 balls by Borde, and quick scoring towards the end of the innings, including a great 86 not out off 91 balls by R Kripal Singh helped Karnataka towards their large total. He was well supported by Haddin 54(46) and Wilkins 48*(48). All bowlers took some tap, but Hawking took 3-61 and Dowla 2-64.

In reply Warwickshire got off to an awful start, losing Howarth, Kaye and Zowla with only 4 on the board. A good partnership between Bradshaw 70(58) and Wilmott 28 got them back in the game. Everybody else contributed, but it was E Hawking with a quick fire 75 who impressed the most. Despite M Jones' great efforts 37* off 22 balls, the Bears had lost too many wickets and failed by only 14 runs in reaching their target. Credit must go to A Jones who took 1-48 off 10 overs, very economical in the circumstances and there were two wickets apeice for Ali and Wadekar.

With defeats for title rivals lancashire and NSW, it was a great day for Karnataka. Manager 12th Man said "It was a great win today and it was too good a team performance to single out individuals. After getting such a high score, we needed early wickets and Kabir Ali and great fielding took care of that."

Next up for karnataka is a four day, round 6 local derby at bottom of the table Mumbai, and a one day round 7 match away at Kent, who beat Lancashire yesterday. Things are looking good for Karnataka, but the manager knows not to take things for granted.

Province Rise to top of the Table on back of Captains Amazing All round performance

A scintillating batting performance from Jimmy Schofield saw Province crush Mashonaland, and effectively end the Zimbabwean promotion hopes for season 6. The win however puts Western Province in the best position on the OD table they have been for a long long time, after seasons of dissapointments the new look "all round" Province side now sit a top the table... alone. After winning the toss and batting Jim Schofield set about compiling a healthy platform with Zac Birch. In the opening slot to fill the gap which has been left wide all season by a lot of players Schofield looked right at home, punishing the bad balls, and making the good balls look easy. After the pair had put on 155 for the opening wicket things looked smooth sailing for the home side however in a dramatic turn of events Province lost Birch (65), Anderson (0), Llewellyn (0) and Birch (7) in the space of 14 runs, so from being 0-155, Mashonaland now had the momentum at 4-169. However young all rounder Eddie Tate then joined his captain, as the pair put the icing on the cake, and the game really beyond any doubt. Tate was explosive in compiling 61 off less than 50 deliveries, however it was Schofield who was the star as he passed 100 and went on with the job managing to finish with 138 of the teams 293.

Mashonaland to be honest were never really in with a shout. On a tough pitch victory for Province was only a matter of time. After some early resistance from Burns (35) the match wound up to an early finish. Once again the skipper came to the front taking 3-31 off his 10 overs. Club historians were left searching the record books searching for a more dominant OD all round performance by a player, and Schofields efforts certainly will go down as one of the most memorable, as Province ran out eventual winners by 130 runs.

The win leaves them on top of the table due to nrr, and a real chance to stay there for the rest of the year. Slats4ever named Schofield's performance as being the best he'd ever seen. "I've seen 7 fa's to win test matches on the last day, lone century stands to win matches but to come out and score 138 not out and back it up with 3 wickets, whilst captaining your side to victory, is a performance of a champion"

Cardiff 192 (B Morley 106*, S Hutton 3/19)
Edinburgh 127 (M Harrity 5/34)

In vic_orthdox's first match as manager, their fortunes matched their dictator's spelling - decidedly poor. After sending in Cardiff on a wicket that did look to provide much for the seamers, the decision to put trust in the pace quartet of Edinburgh looked to pay off. However, despite the best efforts of Hutton, managed to scrape through to 192, and most of the credit for this can go towards Morley, whose undismissed 106 was a perfect example of how to bat on a difficult to negotiate wicket.

Still confident of raking up the runs, Edinburgh attempted to play positive cricket throughout. However, it seemed as though they were chasing 192 in half an hour, as a combination of over ambitious shots and superb swing bowling from Harrity proceeded to destroy the Scots in little time. Only a few starts from the lower order batsmen was able to restore any respectability to the total.

This match sends a firm warning to both the players and their new manager - if this is what an academy side is doing to your One Day side, what will South Australia do in the upcoming CW Bar Cup. The viewers at home are already cringing at their TV screens looking at this score. Here's hoping that some pride can be maintained throughout.

It was a flat track at the Westpac Oval, but looking at the scores you couldn't have guessed it as Tasmania slumped to a 5 wicket defeat against unfancied Northern Districts.

Tasmania lost the toss and were put into bat. The capacity crowd were treated to a woeful display by Tasmania as they were bowled out for 119 in 29 overs. Herath took 3 wickets and Khan and Aldridge took 2 a piece. The top scorer was Charlton with 30.

Northern Districts came out to bat facing the task of scoring 122 for victory. All hope was not lost for Murray Goodwin and his men as they knew a few early wickets would give them a chance. It was not to be. The openers put on a solid partnership of 83 before Reddy was run out. Tasmania attacked and grabbed 3 more quick wickets to leave the score on 98-4. ND lost one more wicket in their chase but a comfortable victory was secured nonetheless.

Tasmania: 119 all out Charlton 30, Herath 3-33 Khan 2-36 Aldridge 2-25
Northern Districts: 122-5 Holland 42, Pascoe 2-22, Rice 2-29

Manager's comment: " Oh dear. That was dreadful batting. It was a great wicket and we really whould have batted the 50 overs and made a decent total of around 250. The bowlers showed we could have defended a total like that, but we've got to move on to the next game now."

Colts have beaten TN for the 2nd time this season on the back of an impressive bowling perfromance and a hundred from K Andrews.

TN were in trouble early after Hitchcock claimed both openers within the space of 7 runs. Cowe and Parida than stedied the ship with an impressive 86 run stand before Cowe was removed, Hammett didn't last to long but Martin ensured the run rate kept moving with 42 from 40 balls. Unfortunatley the tail didn't provide too much resistance, TN ending up with 219 all out after 48 overs. Hitchcock was the pick of the bowlers claiming 3/25 from 9 overs, Cush also picked up 3 wickets.

The Colts chase started disaserously with Kumble and Martin removing the top 3 for just 34 runs. Andrews's than decided to take it on himself to win the game, smashing it to all parts as he went about trying to hold the innings together. Cook, Hamblin and Prosser all came and went and it looked as if his efforts would be in vain, but Cush managed to stick around, his 43 from 62 balls was nothing flashy or flambouyant but he stayed there and pushed it around. Andrews's innings came to a close trying to hit the ball out of the park for the winning runs, ending up with a match winning 108 of 123 balls, Troughton came in and annoyed him no end by smashing his first ball over the mid off boundary for 6.

Colts manager age_master seemed particularly pleased with the win "Beating TN is always a pleasure, he might say at times that he doesn't care about OD games, but i know it hurts him very deeply when hes beaten by me."

Guyana Keep Promotion Hopes Alive With 10 Wicket Win

Guyana travelled to Karachi for a must win match and showed what they are capable of when they work as a team. Sending Karachi in Guyana were in a strong position early, captain Lawson (3-41) and Perrera (3-47) took two early wickets to have both Karachi openers back in the pavillion with the score on eight. Sardesai (60) then joined Dhoni (78) in a 132 run partnership as the pair treated the Guyana bowlers with little respect as boundaries were the fashion of the hour. It wasn't until Lawson brought himself back into the attack that things started to turn for Guyana. The Guyana captain had struggled through his previous five games, with only one wicket and was lucky to keep his place in the side. However, his second spell showed why he has been Guyana's leading one day strike bowler for two seasons, he returned with pace and reverse swing to remove Dhoni and Sardesai. Perrera then combined with Zulch (4-49) in cleaning up the tail with only another 51 runs scored, leaving Guyana a somewhat uncomfortable 192 to chase.

Guyana manager Kyle Wright had been frustrated with Guyana's starts during the season so he returned Ardley to the top of the order. The move worked a treat. Ardley (70*) was devestating along with Francis (110*) in a chanceless partnership that saw Guyana reach the required 192 runs in only 32 overs. Guyana still face a must win situation, but their cause for promotion has been given a lift, as they now move to third place on the division five ladder.

Karachi 191 (35)

Dhoni 78 (86)
Sardesai 60 (74)
Zulch 4-49 (8)
Lawson 3-41 (8)
Perrera 3-47 (9)

Guyana 0-192 (32)
Francis 110* (95)
Ardley 70* (95)

On a sticky wicket in Adelaide, Heath Axelby put in the performance of the season as New South Wales imploded their way out of the Division 1 title chase. Being sent into bat, a slow accumulation ended with 203 for 5, in an innings which included 13 maidens. Then, NSW lost English and Shetty for nought, and were two down without having got off the mark. Wickets continued to tumble, as Bandara, Sigera and Anderson got varying lift off the pitch, and Axelby wrapped up the last three wickets to finish with five for 13, the best bowling figures for SA this season in one-day cricket. South Australia eventually won by 120 runs, placing them second in the table, two points behind Karnataka - with three wins and three losses. The last-round game between South Australia and Karnataka could be absolutely crucial - however, manager Mørk stated that they were concentrating on the Cup tie. "We need to win all our remaining matches to have any chance of silverware," Mørk said. "And you don't do that if you don't concentrate 100 % on the task at hand."

Not to mention the potential sponsors who are watching the forum to see which managers and teams they want to get involved with.

Kent keep their roller-coaster season going with another close win over local rivals Lancashire. 2 runs was all that separted these rival with Qambarani run a ball 106 (109) not enough to get them over the line. The main postives to come out of the match for Kent were the return to form of Jenkins with 82 (86) and Hawkins with 4/33. This victory gives Kent 3 wins and 3 losses, and puts Kent in equal 2nd spot on 6 points with 4 other team.
