One Day - Round 1 - Match Reports

International Regular
Karachi and Warwickshire played out an entertaining fixture, today at the Karachi stadium in Pakistan. A quite unremarkable match with Karachi prevailing by 4 wickets. Warwickshire won the toss and elected to bat.

Warwickshire got off to a bad start though, with the Rawalpindi Express bowling a full inswinger, at 96.7mph, to Darren Maddy and getting him plumb lbw. However, the Shiremen consolidated, with Jeffrey giving stolid support to Carter, while the scoring rate crawled along, before Karachi got another breakthrough. This time in the form of Jeffrey, trying to cut the ball from Hussain, but the ball speeding onto him, keeping low, and uprooting his off stump. Carter scampered along now with J Trott, for company, who managed to keep the scoring going along at a fairly fast click. Carter tried to up the scoring quick runs, trying to improve his SR, but caught on the boundary by Bin Nazir, Hussain picking up his second scalp. Ramprakash and Trott then led their team to 255-3 in their 50 overs, with Trott narrowly missing out on his hundred. A respectable total but by no means a unchaseable one.

Karachi started their innings in similar fashion, with a mix-up between Patel and Bin-Nazir, with both batsman at one end. The manager was seen shaking his head in frustration. However, Bin Nazir and Jenkins got on with it, sharing a 86 run partnership before O Gayle stepped in, and decided to cause a few tremors in the Karachi dressing room. First getting Bin Nazir lbw, then took out M Baig, and S Kabir for no run, and then the Karachi captain, Younis Khan. Jenkins watching this, with a dejected look on his face, soon departed as well to the same bowler. With Gayle now with a 5-fer, Karachi six wickets down, and still 124 runs to go, the chase looked mighty interesting. However, Mansoon and Froggett, and batted with authority, to turn a potentially sticky situation into a easy chase, Mansoon topscoring with 68(57), and Froggett ably supporting him with a classy 55(52).

Manager Gaurav Nayak was quite pleased with his team's performance. Quotes:
"Yep, I think we all gelled together, team effort today, no one scored a century, or took a 5-fer but we still won, nice effort by all the boys."

Queensland Fire In First Round

The Allround power of the Queensland Bulls have had enough fire power to defeat North Zone India by 23 runs. Andrew Symonds set up the victory while David Zulch provided the knock out blow in the final overs.

Andrew Symonds (67) was the mainstay of the Queensland innings, he had helpful contributions from Jimmy Jenkins (51) and out-of-the-gates opener James Hopes who opened the innings with 42 from 35 balls. Zac MacDonald (23 off 11) and Andrew Bichel (33 off 53) provided late support as the Bulls set a very challenging 8-281 for Victory.

North Zone India were able to get off to a good start and were always in the hunt. However it was the spin of David Zulch that closed it out for the Bulls, his 5 overs contributed three wickets for only nine runs. Economic bowling was also a key to the Bulls' victory with James Hopes, bowling first change, bowling his ten overs for 31. Watson 0-10 and Symonds 1-27 also bowled tidely.

COBRAS SUFFER SURPRISE LOSS

South African outfit Cape Cobras have started the One Day season in poor form after going down to a weakened Auckland side at home on Wednesday. After being sent into bat Cobras were in a good position at 2/89 and captain Graeme Smith going along nicely, but some quick wickets saw the home side slump to 5/116 and it was basically just a rescue mission for the lower order. Kemp (21), Puttick (23*) and Zondeki (27*) all played solid innings to get Cobras through to a respectable 8/218 but in all likelyhood it was never going to be enough.

The 218 proved no challenge for the Kiwi's as they wrapped up the match with five wickets in hand and nearly 10 overs to spare, former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming made a blistering 58 off 45 balls, while he was well supportedby Roberts (54) and Carver (61*). None of the Cobras bowlers managed more than a single wicket and their lack of penetration could be a real concern for the season ahead.

At the press conference afterwards coach Simon Fitzsimmons' had this to say; "We got sent in on a tough deck and batting was hard work all day, the difference was their bowlers made things happen and used the conditions to their advantage." "Our batsman in general got out to good balls and we tried hard to post a competitive total but full credit to their medium pacers, Styris and Hitchcock took the game from us in the middle overs and it was too far back."

First Class Debutant
NSW v Victoria One Day

After a road trip to Tasmania last week, the Bushrangers hit the road again, and played NSW, in NSW. Cameron continued with his bad decision making (see round 1 first class), and lost the toss. NSW choose to bat. The Blues batted well around Phil Jaques (105*) all of Victoria's bowlers were carted on the slow pitch at the SCG. Only MacDonald showed any sign of economy, helping hold NSW to 233 from the 50 overs.

The Bushrangers started well, and raced to 0/91 off the first 20 overs, and then wickets started failing to the tight bowling of Lee and Clark. Quiney, Hodge and Hussey feel quickly leaving Beasley a large job to do. Each time a partnership formed and the Vics started to score quickly again, another wicket would fall. Schiller out LBW to Bracken, and Captain White and all-rounder MacDonald holding out in the deep. In the end too much had to be done by Beasley, and despite his 116* the Bushrangers were unable to chase the 233 required.

Well played to NSW, there is a big gap in the bowling abilities of these two teams, but we were happy with our efforts. It appears that Victoria is doomed to keep losing to NSW.
