Lahore scores historic first win

In a nail biting finish to Lahore’s first ever WCC match, middle order ‘rock’ Amjad has seen Lahore through to its first win, but not before the five “traveling Lahore Lunatics” sat through a few nervous overs as Butt came to the crease with still 14 runs needed for victory, thankfully Amjad was able to control the strike and guide Lahore to victory with 5 overs to spare. Earlier in the day Gauteng’s Bacher had the Lahore bowlers at his mercy scoring an undefeated 130 off 160 balls, but had little other help as the rest of the order failed to fire. Ganteng will be out to avenge the loss in next weeks opening 4D fixture of the season.

Gantang 262/5
Bacher 130* (160), Zaman 39 (34), Cullinan 37 (57).
Butt 2/62.

Lahore 263/9
Amjad 71* (69), Rayadu 54 (55), Saravanan 35 (36).
Perera 4/42, Bennett 2/42.

Province start season with Win

The pre season talk out of Newlands had been that Western Province would finally be looking to make a serious charge on the OD title this season. After winning his first toss as skipper Jimmy Schofield sent the Zimbab's into the field and settled down in the pavillion as his top order began shakily. With Llewellyn out in the first over without troubling the scorers huge pressure fell on Drumbill and Birch. Drumbill set about tearing the bowling apart however came unstuck as he went for one to many crushing shots and Mashonaland looked on top early with WP at 2-30. Anderson then however chipped in well with Birch as the pair took the score into the 90's with the scoreboard ticking over well. The departure of Anderson saw the game in the balance, however Birch's steady hand and Schofield's captain like innings Province were able to arrest some ascendency as the bowling started to look tired from Mashonaland. Russel Arnold however came on and swung the game back however for the Zimbab's as he was able to get in amongst the Province lower order and pick up three very valuable wickets, whilst also putting the brakes on the scoring. Eventually Province crumbled to be all out for 222 in 44 overs with Birch the only one getting a score with 68.

In previous years it had been Province's bowling that had let them down, and with a keen Mashonaland batting attack looking for first round points, it would be an understatement to say Slats4ever was nervous about Province's chances. Despite the scoring rate going along slowly it looked like it was going to script for the Zimbab's as Glenn Eaton stood firm and had his side at 1-97 at one stage and well and truley cruising. Samaraweera however then put his hand up and came to Province's rescue. Tired of seeing his side embaressed in the past his destruction of the top order with 4-46 saw his side well on top. Mashonaland then paid the price for scoring slowly early as they really needed to hurry things up towards the end and with a lack of wickets it was going to be hard. Nick Kumble and Eddie Tate clinically came together as they will next week in the 4 dayer and destroyed Mashonaland as they fell away to be 156 all out.

Slats4ever: "Definately good signs for the future. 222 never really seemed like much on this pitch, but to the bowlers credit they all stood up today, and kept it tight when they had to and took wickets at the right time. Samaraweera was great today with a fine all round performance and Birch played an experienced hand with the bat"

Man of the Match: T Samaraweera

Yorkshire triumph in manager's debut

A big matchup against Auckland in the first round of the season saw a confident Yorkshire side win the match on the final ball of the innings, with Chris Hemp striking a powerful 4 to bring up his century.

The day saw some very strong individual performances from both sides. Auckland began strongly, Roberts (55) and Plummer (14) piling on the runs in a 56 run partnership. Raja Ali came out blazing, hitting a solid 57 from 71 balls in a 51 run stand with Roberts. From here, it looked as though the Auckland total could climb as high as 300, with some luck. S. Nazir, having already snared two crucial wickets in Raja Ali and Roberts, ripped through the Auckland batting lineup, finishing with match figures of 10-2-34-4, a performance that kept the Yorkshire side in with some hope, Auckland 5/238 after their 50 overs. Bowling elsewhere lacked penetration, the two opening bowlers, Gough (10-0-61-0) and Hamilton (10-0-74-0) proving expensive and taking no wickets in the process.

Weir and Tendulkar walked out in to the middle, having been instructed to hit the ball around a bit, get some runs on the board. Weir lasted seveteen balls until he was dismissed for just 1 run, the score 1/12. Tendulkar looked dangerous, smashing a blazing 24 off 22 balls, till he skied a catch to O'Neill off Tudor. The bowling stayed on top for some time, Boxall looking good but going out cheaply for 18 off 20, De Silva struggled in his 23 (taking 56 balls to acheive it). The score 4/89, Hemp and Laney found themselves together at the crease, the required runrate slowly climbing. Laney blasted his way to a quickfire 31 off 35 in a one-sided 49 run partnership, Hemp taking his time to get his eye in. Two more wickets fell, Hamilton and Simpson both being sent back to the pavillion with ducks, when captain Darren Gough came to the crease alongside Hemp, who had slowly but steadily made his way into the 40s. Hemp, with a brilliant display of rotation of strike and Gough providing some big hitting heroics of his own, the pair blazed away, a destructive display of batting in the pair's unbeaten 97 run partnership, heavily in Hemp's favour, Gough scoring just 34 of the runs, Hemp getting the team across the line on the last ball, bringing up his century with it.

An emotional debut for Robertinho, the newly instated Yorkshire manager, having been, weeks ago, managing an Academy side with no idea that he would soon be coaching such a prominent club. Whilst delighted with his first game, he admitted that the victory was very much thanks to some standout individuals, the manager praising Nazir (4/34) and Hemp (101*) for their efforts, realising that had it not been for either of them, the strong Auckland side may have emerged victorious. Robertinho praised Auckland's O'Neill, who hit 44 and took 3/58.

Auckland 5/238 (50.0 overs)
Raja Ali 57 (71), Roberts 55 (72), O'Neill 44 (61)
Nazir 4/34, Hamilton 1/30

Yorkshire 7/240 (50.0 overs)
Hemp 101* (112), Gough 34* (29)
O'Neill 3/58, Tudor 2/42

Yorkshire win by 3 wickets

nsw struggled to retain last years form as they come up against a cracking sth australian side first round. looking to get away early with a nice win sth australia never let nsw play the cricket we know they can and totally dominated from the beginning. some bad sighns for nsw with the bowling never really penetrating the sth australian batting line up and with the comp so close between nsw, sth australia and lancashire it could be another tuff season for the blues. martin showed good signs of 80 and g jones continued where he left off late last season. nsw managr not too concerned so early on and congratulated sth australian manager and good friend broncoman with is win.

It's a Case of Same Old, Same Old for Guyana Fans

The new look Guyana side finally made it to the field in the longest off season in World Club Cricket History. Winning the toss Guyana sent Karachi in. Karachi batted very slowly and after their 50 overs were 6-220. B Khan top scored with 68 (69) and D Zulch was the pick of the bowlers for Guyana with 3-32 (10).

The 221 victory target should have been an easy 'get' for Guyana, with their top 5 batsman all averaging over 50. However early wickets set Guyana's cause back and they were to recover, but fall short by an agonising 2 runs. J Jenkins, was yet again the pick of the Guyana batsman, scoring is first one day century in Guyana colours, he ended up with 103 (139) and it was his wicket that handed Karachi the match. The promising youngster was distraught after the game. Louw starred with the ball for Guyana taking 4-31 (9).

Guyana officials will be in discussions with the WCC board during the week, when before play and after the toss, Guyana were instructed by the board that opening bowler R Perrera was not permitted to bowl...more to come.

Chittagong's first match in the WCC saw them wipe the floor with a poor Galle side, L Payne took 4 catches and a stumping and there were 2 runouts in the shambolic Galle innings, Their highest score was 20 as they only got to 116 all out. V Indulkar hit 66* from 66 balls to see the cougars home to an easy win

Tasmania's opening match was a convincing 93-run victory against Northern district, led by the spin duo of Sammels and Bradley.
We batted first and got off to the worst possible start, losing Rowell first ball. Batting is our weak point particularly in OD, but we managed to post a decent total of 209, with the main contributors being Banks (40), Rudolph (43) and Symonds (44)
When it was ND's turn to bat they made a good start, cruising to 95-2. But then Sammels and Bradley ripped through the middle order with 7 wickets falling for just 3 runs, and the last falling at 116. Sammels took 4-14 and Bradley took 4-32.

Victoria v Queensland

The Bushrangers won the toss, and elected to have a bat on a flat MCG pitch. Beasley and Harvey (Kade) got the Vics off to flyer on what could best be described as a road. When Kade feel early and Moon followed him 2 balls later, the top order looked a little shacky. It was the middle order with Kaif & Yapp putting on 97, and Yapp and keeper Wilson with 89 quick runs. Total 306 for 5, very competitive.

For the Bulls Yashpal played a superb innings, showing the Victorian top order that it could be done. Captain Moss refused to bowl, and was a telling difference, as the Bulls did what they willed, as they pilled on the runs, to win by an over with 6 wickets in hand. Wettasinghe went for 86, but took 2 caught and bowled, while Moon got spanked to every part of the MCG.

Best for the Bushrangers were Yapp, Kade Harvey, and Kaif. Looking forward to a better game next week.

ACT PICK UP WHERE THEY LEFT OFF

A blistering 193 from 156 balls from Ashley Tweedie helped ACT pick up where they left off in Season 5...
After winning the toss and batting ACT racked up a massive 4/369 with Ponting giving Tweedie good support with 70*..
In reply WA fought hard however despite a good hundred from Hayward, Ramage took 6 wickets to bowl ACT to victory.. WA bowled out for 305..

So a 64 run win for ACT in their 1st ever Division 3 encounter. Now they move onto NSW with the 2 teams meeting for the 1st time ever in a league encounter....
