I know I'm jumping in just over 30mins too early so I'll pick 2 players as I'm about to head off and if @kingkallis is on here between me heading off and him timing out and he wants my first choice, I'll take my second choice player

1st Choice - Thomas Kelly
2nd Choice - Harry Charlwood

W.G. Grace (p/t - 6)
Charles Bannerman
Andrew Stoddart
Thomas Kelly / Harry Charlwood
Victor Trumper (p/t - 7)
Stanley Jackson (5)
Billy Barnes (3)
Jack Blackham (wk)
Hugh Trumble (4)
Charlie Turner (1)
Tom Richardson (2)

A compromise final pick but I'm pretty happy with how my XI ended up on the whole - 4 very capable frontline bowlers with Stanley Jackson capable of a significant workload and WG Grace with plenty of wickets domestically a handy part-timer. Solid batting with the likes of Trumper at 5 and Jackson at 6 ensuring even if Grace and Bannerman are dismissed early they've got heavyweights to bowl to in the middle order. Stoddart also seems to have a very impressive record for the era.

Charles Absolom

A fine University cricketer who went on to play for Kent, Charles Absolom made a single Test appearance. He came to the wicket after Spofforth, with the first Test hat-trick, had reduced England to 26 for 7, and made a fine half century batting at No. 9. Despite his excellent slow-medium bowling record, he was not asked to bowl in the Australian innings, although seven others were.

I wonder why he never played a game after that?

Pretty happy with my team!

- Solid opening pair of Hobbs & Darling to make life easier for the middle order
- Gunn, Iredale, Giffen, Absolom, Trott will do the duty of top & middle order
- Variety in bowling wins the games and pace attack of Cotter (RF), Morley (LF), Giffen (RMF) with spin of Bates (OS) and militery medium bowling of Trott (RM) are more than enough to get the opposition out twice
- Dick Piling played 250 first class matches as a wicket keeper and that proves his worth as a gloveman

Weak top order, but great middle order and tail with heaps of allrounders and bats deep (Vogler at 9) and includes the power of Jessop at 7. Very varied bowling attack too.

I'm happiest with my batting with a very capable top 6 led by Ranji and Fry and well supported by all-rounders Faulkner and Rhodes. That pair provide the spin options. The new ball bowlers aren't big names but they performed well in limited Test appearances and their first class records are impressive.

Cricketer Of The Year
I will give participants a day or two to present their final team, with stats and comments. I think the FC numbers are important as many of these players, for one reason or another, had very limited careers.

A voting thread will be set up after everyone has had the opportunity to present their team The voting thread will simply present the given batting order (with or without /,o,+,* symbols). With only 8 participants I think a simple 3 votes, 2 and 1 system might be best.

Thank you all for your participation. I hope you enjoyed this draft and learnt a little more about the Test pioneers of over a century ago.
