Twenty20 Cup Round 5

Turistas v Ninjas
John Heads played an outstanding innings under pressure, as runs were typically at a premium in Garven Island. Heads was one of two batsmen to reach 20 for Turistas, and he carried on to play with increasing comfort for a score of 92 not out. The fifth wicket stand was crucial to the chase of 140, and Corrin gave adequate support to Heads, as the two added 43. The combination of catcher Gareth Gooljar and bowler Mike Wilson dealt for Corrin and Reddlapalli with consecutive deliveries, and for a while Ninjas were back on top. Heads continued to control the innings, however, and he dominated a partnership of 45 unbeaten. In fact, English allrounder Dwayne Smith contributed only 9 runs to the cause.

Earlier Xavier Rose led his bowling unit well, taking 2 for 13 with the new ball. He was not required to return for a late spell, as his fellow seamers operated with such discipline an penetration that Ninjas never got on top. Wickets fell regularly throughout the innings - 3 to Bochat - and PR Sajith and Adam Hollioake had to dig deep to post a competitive score. The former was careful in compiling 37 from 32 balls, while the latter launched a late onslaught of 3 boundaries in the last over, by Bochat, and finished unbeaten on 33 from 23 balls. Ninjas managed 139-9, and despite a big effort by Thomas and his bowlers, it was a target well short.

Ninjas innings 139-9 (20 overs)
PR Sajith 37 (32), AJ Hollioake 33* (23)
T Bochat 3-31 (4)

Turistas innings 142-6 (16.2 overs)
JJD Heads 92* (50), M Corrin 20 (16)
SE Fuller 2-29 (3.2)

Turistas won by 4 wickets.
Man of the Match: JJD Heads

****atoos v Mathemagicians
Second placed ****atoos were stunned in front of their home crowd as they crumbled to defeat by 25 runs, largely due to the efforts of Nick Hancock. Hancock came into the Mathemagicians lineup for the first time in the tournament and looked a livewire in all departments. His batting was central in a total of 142-7, then the allrounder took 2 key wickets to assist the ****atoos implosion.

The offspin of Zac Ritchie looked to have Mathemagicians in all manner of bother. Continuing to impress, the young man showed excellent control and variations and claimed excellent figures of 3-12 in his 4 overs. The other bowlers were not quite as tidy, however, and it allowed a recovery late in the innings. Morgan Burridge played an anchor knock of 32 and Hancock complemented him with a dazzling display of improvisation. Hancock moved around the crease habitually and thrived on deflections and deft touches more than power. He hit the last ball of the innings back past the bowler for a boundary, bringing up a half-century from 31 balls and ending things in style.

****atoos were still confident chasing a relatively modest total. The openers added 40 for the first wicket with very few difficulties. In fact it was a rank long hop by Neil Pickup that secured the first wicket. James Robertson miscued a slog and was caught in the deep. From there Pickup's namesake Carter took control with the ball. With his left-arm seam he supplied the first concerns for the ****atoos top order. And his probing delivery was rewarded by 3 quick wickets. ****atoos slumped to 45-5 when Hancock was called into the attack. He duly pushed the result closer to the hands of the visitors with the wickets of Zander de Bruyn (7) and Thamba Mamesh (17), and from 51-7 there seemed little avenue of revival. But as is so often the case in this game, the lower order fought back, understandly headed by Chris Raftery, a specialist batsman coming in at number 9. Raftery posted 35 with 5 fours, but only succeeded in giving the innings some shape of respectability. Mathemagicians managed to finish the job with the ball within 14 overs.

Mathemagicians innings 142-7 (20 overs)
NR Hancock 50* (31), MC Burridge 32 (29), JR Gray 20 (30)
ZJ Ritchie 3-12 (4)

****atoos innings 117 ao (13.4 overs)
CP Raftery 35 (19), RJ Dauth 24 (10)
NM Carter 3-18 (2)

Mathemagicians won by 25 runs.
Man of the Match: NR Hancock

Dazzlers v Rabid Wolves
The Twenty20 title race received a belated boost with Dazzlers achieving brilliance to prove Rabid Wolves mortal. Dazzlers batted well to overcome a hefty Rabid Wolves score 185-5, and doing so with 2.3 overs to spare. James Stedman lit up West Robbham with a clinic on legside sixes. He hit 7 of them in his knock of 79 unbeaten, including 4 in succession off the hapless offspin of Nathan Hauritz.

Rabid Wolves batted first with very little difficulty against the Dazzlers attack. Again Dan Rai set the innings off at a blazing pace with a 38-ball knock of 61. In particular to went after Kingsley Clapham and collected 3 fours and a six off the left-armer. The ever-consistent Mørk complemented the dashing start with a solid middle order contribution, albeit lacking anything spectacular. The platform was then set for Sam Morris (35 off 18) and Kieron Pollard (10 off 5) to throw caution to the wind and elevate the score to 185-5 in 20 overs.

The confident swagger of the Rabid Wolves was evident as they jogged onto the pitch to defend the total, but that was lost before the completion of the first over. Daniel Towns took a first ball single and allowed Sean Young to tee off against former teammate Ryan Dunn with a four and 3 sixes. In all 23 runs were scored and Dunn took no further part in the game. It seemed a bit harsh, particularly as the other bowlers were hardly much of an improvement. Again Dave Richards stood out with his keen understanding of T20 bowling, but Stedman and Young got comfortable quickly and swung the momentum decisively toward Dazzlers, long before the closing stages.

Rabid Wolves innings 185-5 (20 overs)
DK Rai 61 (38), H Mørk 48 (39), SC Morris 35* (18)
G Sriram 2-24 (4)

Dazzlers innings 186-3 (17.3 overs)
JE Stedman 79* (41), S Young 61 (29)
DP Richards 2-30 (3)

Dazzlers won by 7 wickets.
Man of the Match: JE Stedman

Upper Body v Masters XI
A day after they suffered their first defeat at the hands of Rabid Wolves, Upper Body were demolished by Brian Lara and his Masters XI. Lara opened the batting and raced along to 60 from 31 balls to mastermind a comfortable 8-wicket result in East Robbham. Lara was dropped by Darren Murphy on 2 and celebrated his good luck with consecutive boundaries off Nath Patrick, before hitting Rhys Williams for 3 sixes in the spinner's second over. Masters XI raced to 111-2 and victory within 12 overs. Lara finished the game with a booming cover dive against Andy Maina.

The game was lost for Upper Body with the bat, however. Chris Dwyer apart, the batting was overconfident and reckless throughout the order. Thomas Odoyo sent Camps and Murphy back to the pavilion before either had scored, then Lance Klusener dismissed Dan Smith (10) on the same team sccore - 10 for 3. A small recovery by Dwyer and Fiztsimmons gave way to another collapse. Upper Body lost the last 7 wickets for 62 runs to be all out for 108. Even such a poor total was only possible because of Dwyer's fine effort. Previously he could hardly buy a run, but Dwyer reigned his game in under pressure and played a resourceful, yet exciting, knock of 59.

Upper Body innings 108 ao (13 overs)
CR Dwyer 59 (31)
T Henderson 3-18 (3)

Masters XI innings 111-2 (11.4 overs)
BC Lara 60* (31), SR Patel 24 (12)
D Mohammed 1-16 (3)

Masters XI won by 8 wickets.
Man of the Match: BC Lara

Bleh. *holds hand up after hardly-T20 worthy effort* Had to happen sooner or later. Shouldn't have let Young score so quickly though.

Ow. Young and Stedders destroyed us. Trip of rip didn't keep it tight enough as a unit, although Richards is a star, and poor Dunn got mullered.

Good to see Rai hitting form though. Mørk and Morris keep making valuable contributions too.
