Can't really afford Wood's brand of all-or-nothing in these conditions and what should be a low-scoring game.

Not sure the selection is the worst based on form, but after the long break not sure you can pick on that.

Whatever it takes!!!
Good points from Nass on Duncan Fletcher's coaching philosophy of pace above everything. Remember in 2011 when India toured Australia, all our bowlers kept hitting 140+ kph but were well below par skills wise to the Aussie counterparts, who, once for a change, were actually slower on average than the Indian contingent.

Was that after Siddle went vegan?

He needs a hard bouncy pitch for his short of a length, seam-reliant style to be effective. England doesn't seem like the best environment for him but he should do well in Australia.

Yeah he did bowl so much better in South Africa than he ever has before but I can't remember him ever actually taking wickets in England.

Every partnership other than the Blackwood one has crossed 30 and played a significant number of deliveries. So important especially considering the dropped shoulders in the English camp. Doesn't take a lot to get Archer frustrated and now Wood's body language seems off as well.

Was Toby Roland-Jones in the larger squad or is he in one of his injury spells?

Would tear up here. Miss him.

England’s strange selection coming to haunt them. Woakes and Broad very unlucky to miss out in home conditions.

Leg byes are such bullshit. Especially ones where you haven't even played a shot.
Leg byes should remain because they prevent garbage negative bowling. I've seen it happen in school cricket where spinners fire in leg breaks onto the pads. They're difficult to hit on spinning decks, and would lead to low risk low reward extremely dull cricket where you can't be out lbw but it also inhibits run scoring. Batsmen can also be runout off them so its not like the rule favours the batting team entirely.

The evasive action rule is definitely bad though imo.

Between this and the people wanting the "pitching outside leg" LBW gone I don't think people quite appreciate how important it is for the general watchability of cricket that, with occasional exceptions, bowlers are encouraged to bowl at or outside off stump. Makes for infinitely more interesting cricket.

Archer doing his best here to ensure the new ball doesn’t swing for long! A number of nice leg stump throwdowns here, absolutely not what is needed at this stage when the new ball is crucial!

Getting a dangerous lead with Holder to come, need him in with the ball still new. Get Wood into attack for me unless Archer seriously pulls his finger out here.
