Our FC batting stocks look genuinely awful it's depressing. I don't want to see Renshaw, Handscomb etc. again. At this point I'd rather just punt on a bunch of young 24 year olds

McSweeney i guess
Thing is McSweeney's still only averaging 34 after 28 matches. I do think he's a decent talent, but more like one who'll average high 30s in tests at best

The perils of having pretty awful FC wickets as a rule are having a significant effect. There's a significant risk of an 80's style slump in 3-4 years time.
It's not just the wickets, it's the setup, though the pitches are definitely part of the thing that is stopping batsmen developing when they reach FC level.

I hate to admit to reading BigFooty (but there's simply more discussion on there, even if most of the posters have apparently had a lobotomy), but a few guys on there talk about how all age group representative cricket in NSW is white ball and all the young batsmen are taught 'bat speed' rather than proper strokes. No one is learning to bat time. The focus on pathways also means batsmen are both playing less grade and fringe or ex-FC players drop out much sooner. So young players are mostly playing against other young players and not being tested as much.

As NSW is nearly a third of the country it's obviously going to affect things when they're not pulling their weight. Their Shield side has been a disgrace, and while the lack of test players is an excuse, it's been the case for a decade. They've had time to build a side without them.

All this talk from us might seem a bit over the top. I actually don't mind us seeing drop a test at home (as long as we draw or win the series) as it keeps things interesting. But the crapness of practically every team overseas of course prevents that. Pakistan should have been able to win a test, but went to pieces at crucial times to keep in with their stereotype. But I want a team that can win in England, and expects to. This summer with more sporting wickets has shown that the team has issues in those conditions, and are vulnerable under pressure. I want a strong side and a strong opposition that can test them, but not too much. Except England, stuff them.

This is why I feel like he should only be in the frame after dominating the Shield for another season or so. Needs to prove that what's happened is that he's stepped up a level, not just hit a good patch.

the protection thing never made sense. iirc the old man selector said it, but Quiney had runs on the board. it was a logical selection in the sense that he had form and stuff.

it wasn't logical in that he was clearly not better than hughes, but it's no different to Harris/Burns/Wade getting opening gigs over Usman, we often don't pick the best player, just the narrative.

likewise Cowan was a narrative selection. A ton in the shield final and a very hot start to the season. "form"
Never made sense but it happened anyway.

The Langer era selections were a different species of insanity and I think I despise them more in retrospect. In fact easily more despicable.

Beautiful isn't it.

I can't honestly wait to see how he plays against Jamieson / Wagner in NZ (if the latter is playing). Recipe for some bad chakras.

Thankfully NZ grounds are so small and pathetic.

Australia would be 40 for 3 or something and Trav will look like **** for a half and hour before peeling a run a ball 143 much to the dismay of thierry henry (not the footballer)

Could make a whole bracket tourney full of "mediocre Shield hacks who got a few Tests for Australia in the 2010s". Not just Doolan, Quiney and Cowan but also Maddinson, Finch. Throw Cartwright and Patterson too though they don't fall under the same "proven journeymen who inevitably fail" category as the others.

Head apparently the 3rd Aussie to get a king pair after Gilchrist and Ryan Harris
That Harris pair was hilarious. Given out four times in two balls

Falling for the bait and all but you are playing on literally the two biggest grounds in the country – bigger than any other overseas series you'd play.

The games are at The Basin and Hagley, so Wagnerball would be on at proper sized grounds if Wags could still bowl faster than 80kph.:(

I've always got the impression the Basin is pretty small, but that's more the spectator capacity rather than the playing surface isn't it? Seems like a case for double-tier stands a la Lord's, though that would spoil the ground's appearance.

Do you think Auckland is going to get a test ground any time in the near future? I see there's talk about Colin Maiden Park, but talk is different to action.

Hopes never played a test but that would have been oof.

In terms of the most ill conceived batsman selections. Hard to go past Burns getting reselected for that India series, Langer was truly nuts.
