are we doing the cw thing of biffing ugly effective players again?

nicholls has runs against SA and Oz. that's a lot more than someone like tom latham can say
Agree, though admittedly I've missed seeing both Nicholls' short innings this match. Should have scored a century last match before he gave it away though.

Runs against Australia? He averages 19 against them. Fair play for that 100 v South Africa, but aside from that his record is poor against everyone save Bangladesh. I actually agree that he should be retained. His hundred was only a few games ago, and it is important to reward good performances against good teams (hence why Hamish Rutherford deserved such a long rope). I just think it will cost us because he's not very good.

i don't think he's great, but cw has time and again had to eat it after we were proven wrong by O'Brien, Elliott, Watling, Wagner etc and Nicholls is showing promise of joining that group.

Sometimes a Hopkins is a Hopkins and will only ever be a good domestic cricketer but I think we're too quick to write off the battlers.

Gabriel deserves these wickets, tbf.
He's a hell of a lot better bowler now than he was when they toured in 2014 and should gradually get that average down.

What do people think of this WI side vs that 2014 one? They had Chanderpaul and Darren Bravo then, while the batting has not fired this time. However the bowling attack last time was truly terrible (bar a bit of long-sleeved spin) and a definite improvement this time. Still a tendency for the bowling and fielding to go off the boil when the batsmen are playing well though.

the team we played against in the tour there after our home series was the best of the 3 comfortably. roach and taylor in form, and they still had the quality in the batting.

these guys can hold a bat, they just have the curse of the 'rebuilding phase' team about them where there are no/few seniors to carry some weight, a bunch of raw cricketers and a couple of passengers.

A better team on paper. Hasn't quite translated into on the field performances. The new ball bowling is vastly superior. But Chanderpaul was still Quality in 2013, and Bravo was going through one of his periodic bouts of excellence. In the current side, only Brathwaite approaches that level of quality. There's probably more talent sprinkled throughout the top-6, but it's counter-balanced by the total lack of experience.

Woot. Vital innings given how badly the rest of the top-order batted. The race to 18 is back on!
