@ Hendrix: Often players don't realise how limited they are until they reach test level, like Hamish Rutherford. Weaknesses don't disappear overnight either, and a player showing he can cover for a weakness is showing he thinks about his game and is prepared to work and apply himself which is what we want. More shots available is always better but output trumps all.

Fulton wtf?

Rutherford will definitely benefit from developing a pull shot. At the moment you can bowl to his weakness and he can't do anything about it. I notice he's better off his legs to the full balls than he was on debut so that's good to see. He can certainly be a test opener in time.

I think we're mostly in agreement. I just think that test match cricket is not the place for a player to develop his technique. Would you want a bowler to be attempting a doosra for the first time in test cricket? A bowler who can't keep a good seam position to try to do that in test cricket? No, right? Well Rutherford shouldn't be applying a pull shot for the first time at Test level either.

If he'd proven that he has the temperament to score runs despite his limited technique (like Cook, Smith, hell even Dhoni) then that's ok. But he's proven he can't so should be dropped.

we need to smash one of these blokes, prefferably Narine since he had the wood over us last time. If we can remove the spinners from the equation we can get the pacemen and Deonarine bowling lots of overs.

Oh gagf

I think the same about making big technical changes in test cricket, but I'd be holding off on making a call until we see how he goes relative to the other openers when they all bat together in the Shield. We have a few weeks before our next test so we need to use them wisely selection wise.

If theyre setting a leg slip trap use it as an opportunity to kill one if you're going to take it on. Don't tickle it, smash it at his nose.

Not watching but Sammy's two excellent catches vs our missed half chances... could be a big difference in this match.
The return catch was decent, not amazing.

This leg side catch was ridiculous though. I honestly don't know how he moved his hands fast enough, let alone actually see it and react that quick to it. Outrageous.

We need to dominate the spinners and not let them settle. I don't mean big shots, but killing them with singles. The West Indies are all in on the spin plan - if it doesn't work they have to either bowl the pacemen into the ground or allow us to tick along at 4 an over.

Good to see this pair doing exactly that in early days.
