I'm beginning to think Rutherford is a bit ****. Even by NZ opening standards.

That was as bad a dismissal as it is possible to get, for an opener.

Although tbh, Fulton also regularly exhibits dismissals that defy the openers handbook .....

Rutherford is not the most technically correct batsman is he? Never looked like making runs in these conditions, even against these bowlers.

He's flattered to deceive so far. Has only ever scored in Dunedin - and if you think the pitch was flat last week, it was even flatter when he got his 170 against England.

Some of the time it seems like he gives away starts but that's not justification to keep him there either. He's weak against the moving ball, has limited scoring options, but rather than making up for it with superior concentration (like Cook or Smith do) he has brain farts.

It's good that we brought Redmond into the squad but if we had brought a young opener in (Raval, Latham) it would allow us to put more pressure on him and see what he does. I'm not convinced by him, anyway.

I would actually bet that PEWS bet on that exact dismissal. The man himself to confirm.

Yeah, I don't think you could predict Ruds dismissal mode. Defending with basically the inside edge of your bat a ball outside your shoulder. It's a new one to me.

He just refuses to learn anything full stop, as far as I can see - see also his standard dismissal to spin looking to loft over the top, with the first test twice v Shillingford just the latest examples. He's picked on potential but that doesn't work if you stubbornly refuse to adjust and improve your game.

Doull and Smith having a huge whinge about WI putting a deep point in - I actually don't think it's a bad position to Taylor. Point is a big boundary scoring area for him, and drying that up could lead to him getting frustrated. Regular point is not exactly a catching position anyway, so it's not like they're losing someone out of the slips.

Very optimistic review that by Sammy, had more than a hint of Taylor-is-NZ's-best-bat-so-let's-hope.
