I never thought I'd see a bowler who was capable of bowling 140km/h+ look so unthreatening like Watson did in the Tests.
You not see much of Brett Lee then - especially his red faced, teeth clenching effort against Hoggard?

yeah i must say im not a big fan of his bowling - than again in tests, if the selectors play 2 spinners while he is playing, he wont have that many overs to bowl - so his role will be more to keep it tight and take the odd wicket AND score heavily with the bat
That will be hard to do from number 7. I think he should be played as a batting allrounder or not at all. Especially since hs history of back problems suggests another break-down is only around the corner, much like Steve Waugh. It's why Steve gave up regular bowling and concentrated on his batting instead. Watson would do well to consider doing the same.

Watson looked less threatening. Sehwag was eating him up. Constantly I was shocked to see a ball Sehwag would dispatch to the cover fence with amazing ease (more so than usual, anyway) and then the speed would come up and it would say 143km/h. Just don't understand it.

much like the Freddie post before late 2001, has i said before all Watson needs is more bowling at the highest level, then i'm sure his bowling will become more effective at test level..

If you were a high quality first class batsman, batting on the average first class pitch, there would be few people in world cricket that you'd rather face than Shane Watson.

The things is there is no reason why he can't become a very good bowler..

He now has a good action and gets good pace and fairly good accuracy he just has to learn to use some veriation and work on his leg and off cutters more and hitting the seam.

I have seen him swing the ball when he's been given the new ball but he's not going to get the chance to use the new ball very often. He would be well advised to work on reverse swing.. get his wrist position right.

Does the tv get turned off when Brett Lee bowls in test matches?

The biggest problem Freddie had at that point was that he was over weight and not quite fit. Are u suggesting that Watson has the same problems?

Watson does have potential with the ball but his batting technique suits the number 4 position a hell of a lot more than michal clarke he averages in teh high 40's with the bat at first class level so why not give him a chance at 4 in the test arena. As i said mcgrath needs to sit him down and talk about seam position and sum of the finer arts of bowling. He is an exciting prospecy reminds me of jaques kallis beyond end. Wonderful top hand player watson can be just liek kallis he needs to learn to pick more gaps. All you lamers on this site who think that watson can never be good with the ball are one track minded. I think he just needs to improve and with ahrd work anyone can. James hopes is another option queensland could take if theyw anted to play 2 spinners.

ah no Freddie weight and fitness problems were gone before late 2001 when England were in India. I'm talking about bowling during that series is when Freddie started looking like a decent enough test match bowler i.e he began to at least get some movement with the ball, all of that game with exposure thats alll Watson needs as well n he'll find something...

He's 24 with bugger all bowling behind him.

On Saturday, he was genuinely quick and also looked decidedly better with the bat whilst he was there than all others, including Hayden and Maher.

BTW, Id rather face Giles - inaccurate and unthreatening.

So what do you call that full season of FC cricket in England he just played?

Yeah but those quick balls were so short, they flew over the heads of the batsmen. Now what use is that? You might affect the psyche of a FC batsman, you might even scare one a little but at Test level, the decent players will sweat on the inevitable short and wide one, which comes when Watson tries to bowl too quick.

No matter which way you slice it, the man needs to find sideways movement, any way he can. Otherwise, he's fodder.

Well said TC. Movement is a must.

Really looking forward to seeing Ramdin. Quality young player.

Yeah, Watson's bowling at present reminds me of Andy Bichel when the ball wasn't swinging. They sort of don't have much trajectory in their deliveries, and they skid onto the bat. When that occurs, no matter how fast you're bowling, if there's is no movement, then it's goodnight.
