Cheers Kyear!!...no doubt Cummings was brilliant last season and when i watched him play for the A-team he really looked the part...he has this gift of making the ball move away just enough from the batsman to make him play...it was thrilling to watch. No question if he has another steller season for bim his name will be in the hat to face NZ!!..

Muirhead: IND, NZ tour brought a further sense of realization that something has to be done

CLEARLY ALARMED by the recent ill-fated tours of India and New Zealand, the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) says it is moving swiftly to prevent any major fallout and limit any threat to the future viability of the game in the region.

Speaking at a media conference yesterday at Kensington Oval to announce a new sponsorship deal with Banks Holdings Limited for the upcoming limited overs series against England, WICB chief executive Michael Muirhead said the board was cognizant of the West Indies team’s challenges and would be proactive in addressing them.

“It is crystal clear that we didn’t do as well as we would have wanted to over the past few series but what it has done is it has brought a further sense of realization to us that something has to be done, and in this regard we are going to be debriefing the team members when they come. By team, I mean the management team and the captains,” Muirhead said.

“We have a series of plans that we are putting in place to ensure that West Indies cricket will thrive and survive in years to come. And it cannot only be at the elite level; it is the developmental level that we have to be treating with much of what we have to do.”

Lets hope this isn't just hot air and they actually STICK to their promises this time!!..the board have no excuses now 8-) .

Ok folks!!...first game of the nagico one day competition took place today in trinidad...Jamaica Versus defending champions Winwards.

Early team news was Jerome Taylor wasn't playing in this match and young, talent batsman Jermain Blackwood was somehow left on the bench (smh)

Anyway Winwards started well and had Jamaica 31/3 early on... 28 year old Seemer Mervin Mathew took all three...and without Gayle and Samuels in the top three Jamaica had a young opening pairing so it was no surprise they were in trouble early...but then Andre Mcarthy...who is just starting to make a name for himself in the jamaican team and Tamer Lambert came together and put on a massive partnership of around 180, that took the pressure off Jamaica...Lambert fell for 88 and sadly Mcarthy fell in the mid 90s...Russell and Baugh came in to push the score close to 300!!..

So then it was Winwards turn to bat and they started very fast...WI opener Johnson Charles was hitting boundries for fun and Devon Smith was supporting him well...Charles fell after getting his 50 but Andre Fletcher came in and kept the momentum going...he got a quick 21 but then got out to a good catch and it all started to go down hill...winwards were 150/5....then former HPC student Keddy Lesporis came in and played a blinder...was taking the singles and hitting the odd boundry...but his partners kept falling around him...in the end he got his ton but winwards lost by 14 runs. Really happy to see some big scores put up and young batsmen like Mccarthy and Lesporis coming good with the bat..lord knows we need that.

Smoke fails to stop Nagico start
Published: Guardian
Friday, January 31, 2014
Vinode Mamchan

Toxic smoke in and around Port-of-Spain failed to stop the opening of the regional first class season yesterday as the Nagico Super 50 series bowled off at the Queen’s Park Oval, with Jamaica and the Windward Islands meeting.

Up to press time, Jamaica appeared on the road to victory after Andrew McCarthy and Tamar Lambert both hit half centuries to guide them to 282 for four wickets.

The Windwards were in trouble at press time, losing Devon Smith and Andre Fletcher before reaching 100 runs.

President of the T&T Cricket Board (TTCB) Azim Bassarath was a proud man, noting that the nothing was likely to stop the ‘Carnival of Cricket’, as the tournament is being dubbed.

Perched at the top of the Carib Beer Stand, Bassarath, who is also chairman of the regional matches committee said: “At the moment from my vantage point I am not seeing any smoke. We have no problems with any smoke at the Oval and we are going ahead with the cricket.”

On Wednesday, schools and some business places in and around Port-of-Spain closed their doors and sent their workers home early, as they cited the polluted air as being dangerous. Bassarath however had a different take on the matter.

“People in this country are too lazy and they look for every excuse to leave work and go home and lime. This attitude sometimes sickens me because we need to be a more progressive and industrious country.

“I want to tell all those who left work early to come down to the Queen’s Park Oval and look at the cricket. There is no smoke here, so you will be safe, so come down and support something that is good.”

Bassarath said the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB), as well as the T&T Cricket Board (TTCB) have not received any complaints or concerns from any of the managers, or players of any of the teams and cricket will go on as planned.

McCarthy, Lambert spank 50s for Jamaica
By STEPHON NICHOLAS Friday, January 31 2014
Newsday

A RESCUE job from Andre McCarthy (93) and Tamar Lambert (88) dug Jamaica out of early trouble yesterday against the defending champs Windward Islands as the Nagico Super50 Tournament bowled off in style at the Queen’s Park Oval, Port of Spain.

With just a sprinkling of fans around the Oval, the duo gave the teams a glimpse of their potential even without injured stars Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels present.

An opening spell of three wickets for 19 runs from six overs by pacer Mervin Mathew had reduced Jamaica to 32 for three in the tenth over before Lambert and McCarthy combined in a 179-run partnership that turned the tables and caused the Windward Islands fielders’ heads to drop.

When both were dismissed short of their century, Andre Russell —three fours and a six — and Carlton Baugh Jr — five fours — provided a late flurry of boundaries to take Jamaica to a massive 282 for five.

Windwards, in reply, were wobbling slightly at 68 for two at press time with opener Devon Smith on 21 not out.

Earlier, Jamaica won the toss and opted to bat. Matthew, bowling from the Brian Lara Pavilion end, had opener Horace Miller playing and missing a few times before he finally nicked one to Smith at first slip. The left-handed opener John Campbell, who had previously edged Mathew through the vacant second slip region, sliced an attempted drive to the third man boundary where Tyrone Theophile sprinted forward to take a diving catch to make it 28 for two. It was soon 32 for three as Mathew induced a bottom edge off a listless Bonner who was caught low by wicketkeeper Andre Fletcher for one off 15 balls.

But Lambert and McCarthy showed great patience to see off Mathew and the difficult period before going on the offensive.

Jamaica needed the 20th over to bring up their 50 but quickly shifted gears. McCarthy began to play his shots, muscling Kenroy Peters over mid-on for a boundary to move to 18 from 45 balls. Lambert joined the action, sweeping Garey Mathurin for four while his partner took the attack to the left-arm spinner, pulling him for a four soon after to move into the thirties. Lambert, on 21, had a reprieve as he was dropped by Mathurin in a caught and bowled chance. The robust veteran did not tone down his aggression, flicking the spinner nonchalantly off his pads for six as Jamaica began to up the run rate, bringing up their 100 in the 28th over.

McCarthy brought up his 50 off 77 balls, with a six back off medium pacer Johnson Charles. His innings was almost cut short next over when he offered Johnson a simple caught and bowled chance which he fumbled. Lambert reached his half-century soon after off 73 balls in the 36th over with a single.

The 26-year-old McCarthy began to accelerate, dealing in boundaries as he took the attack to Peters with boundaries through the leg-side. His skipper also tore into Peters, crashing two fours through the off-side in an over that went for 18 as Jamaica motored to 175 for three after 39 overs.

The dangerous Mathew was brought back in the 41st over to stop the run flow but he too felt the wrath of McCarthy’s bat, tugged through midwicket for another four. But Lambert, on 88, looking to steer a delivery from Johnson to the third man region, edged one to Fletcher to make it 211 for four in 44th over. McCarthy followed soon after, caught by substitute Gary Emmanuel off Mathurin who was replacing Mathew who was banned from bowling after successive waist high full tosses.

Russell and Baugh Jr, with licence to swing for the fences, finished the job started by the previous duo, taking apart the Windwards bowling at the death to finish with a flourish.

Guyana relishing Irish contest Friday 31st January 2014 at 1:30 EST
Friday, January 31 2014
Newsday

GUYANA WILL be relishing the opportunity to face Ireland in their Zone A meeting today of the NAGICO Super50 Cricket Tournament at the Queen’s Park Oval, St Clair, starting at 1.30 pm.

Ireland are one of two invited teams in the tournament, the other being the Combined Campuses and Colleges (CCC) while Guyana will be looking to atone for a few disappointing seasons at the regional level.

Guyana captain Christopher Barnwell noted that his team will be relying heavily on the experience of seasoned campaigners Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Ramnaresh Sarwan and Narsingh Deonarine.

In a media interview at the Oval yesterday, Barnwell said, “Ireland is an international team but we can’t take them lightly. We have to go out there and play good cricket.

“We have a lot of talented guys and we have a lot of senior guys like Shiv, Sarwan and Narsingh. I think it’s going to be a good game for us to go out there.”

Talking about Chanderpaul’s influence on the side, the former Windies limited-overs team all-rounder stated, “any team would love to have Shiv. He’s a very experienced player and he’s someone who would look to bat right through the innings.

“It’s always a bonus having Shiv and Sars in our team, along with Narsingh. Not many occasions we’ll get to play with those fellahs in the same team, so it’s always important to play and learn from them as much as possible.”

Ireland captain William Porterfield, talking about his opponents, said yesterday, “they’ve got a few big names on the team and there are going to be a few lads who we haven’t seen much of before.

“Hopefully the likes of Kevin O’Brien who played in the CPL, he might step up and have some information on those lads,” Porterfield added. “That’s one of the challenges, we have to adjust.”

Former Trinidad and Tobago and West Indies all-rounder Phil Simmons has been the team coach since 2007 and his team captain stated, “he has plenty knowledge of the ground and the pitches.

“He’s got an abundance of knowledge about the game in general,” Porterfield added. “He’s been fantastic for us over the past six to seven years. We’ve got to keep taking as much information from him as we can.”

Teams -

IRELAND: William Porterfield (captain), Alex Cusack, George Dockrell, John Mooney, Tim Murtagh, Andrew McBrine, Kevin O’Brien, Niall O’Brien, Andrew Poynter, Max Sorensen, Paul Stirling, Stuart Thompson, Gary Wilson, Craig Young; Phil Simmons (coach).

GUYANA: Christopher Barnwell (captain), Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Anthony Bramble, Robin Bacchus, Trevon Griffith, Leon Johnson, Narsingh Deonarine, Royston Crandon, Assad Fudadin, Devendra Bishoo, Veerasammy Permaul, Ronsford Beaton, Paul Wintz; Esuan Crandon (coach).

West Indies news....Gayle, Bravo sign central contracts
ESPNcricinfo staff
January 17, 2014

List of contracted players

Grade A - men's: Dwayne Bravo, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Chris Gayle, Sunil Narine, Darren Sammy, Marlon Samuels

Grade B - men's: Kemar Roach

Grade C - men's: Darren Bravo, Johnson Charles, Kirk Edwards, Kieran Powell, Denesh Ramdin, Ravi Rampaul, Shane Shillingford

Grade A - women's: Shanel Daley, Anisa Mohammed, Deandra Dottin, Stafanie Taylor

Grade B - women's: Merissa Aguilleira, Shemaine Campbell, Subrina Munroe, Shaquana Quintyne, Shakera Selman, Tremayne Smartt

Chris Gayle and Dwayne Bravo have signed the West Indies Cricket Board's annual retainer contract after a gap of three years. Both players were offered board's Grade A contracts, but Kieron Pollard, who was the third player in 2010 to refuse the central contract, did not feature in the list.

"I would like to believe it was a recommitment to West Indies cricket from both of them," Michael Muirhead, the WICB chief, told the Trinidad Express. "They were advised that they were being awarded contracts and they accepted, so it augurs well for West Indies cricket and we really did not have to go into negotiations or anything. The fact they are presenting themselves, making themselves available at the expense of the other leagues speaks for itself. I am happy about that."

Muirhead said the board was in discussions with the West Indies Players Association to work out the best solution for issuing no objection certificates to players when they go and play in other leagues. "For West Indies cricket to thrive and to grow they have to make themselves available," Muirhead said. "At the same time, we don't want to limit the amount or prevent their opportunities to earn."

Other cricketers to make it to the top grade include Sunil Narine, Darren Sammy, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Marlon Samuels. While only Kemar Roach was offered a Grade B contract, seven players were added to the Grade C list. The board also announced the list of 10 contracted women cricketers.
