What do we make of that day's play? I mean, we know if Australia was reduced to 5/170 odd against a County side we'd be right to say it was a disaster, but I presume we do what we always do with England and say "Just a warm up, they're trying things" etc etc.

Are there any decent highlights around? I gather this was on Sky in the UK wasn't it?
From what I watched I got a distinct feeling that some of the batsmen weren't taking it entirely seriously.

This.

Apparently Australia is a basketcase for going early against a CC side, despite delcaring early, I'd like to hear an explanation.

I'll give you the tip, Harris and Pattinson are a little bit more full on than Mills and Mahmood.

Oh, but apparently we're in for the mother of all hidings....

Says Who??? Who has called you a basket case for your performance in a warm up game???

Well who would have thought it??. Your 2 best test bowlers a bit more "full on" than a couple of county net bowlers, one of who is 20 years old and only played 15 1st class games and the other who was **** when he was good enough to play test cricket for England.

Oh, but apparently we're in for the mother of all hidings....
Well only 5 zip would fit that description and I can't see that happening.............but I'd like to know what has been seen in these warm up games so far that convinces you you're in with a real shout???

carn Adders, Australia actually looks like a team now, the selectors are done with the Glenn Maxwell bull****, the new coach is respected and liked, the team is confident, and there is some confidence in the group. You have been saying how England have better players - which is fair, much of the Aussie team is inexperienced, however some confidence goes a long way, England will be familiar conditions, Watson is back where he wants to be, Rogers will hopefully steer the ship, Clarke is a god while Khawaja and Hughes are slipping into some nice form, the bowlers don't look too shabby either. I think the series is more open than you may think, there is certainly a chance for the Aussies, but I'm not tipping them to win, I just think the teams are more even than what you've been saying.

"But you've got a hammering in England coming your way first fella." Said by your goodself, and pretty much every Englishman in this thread.

Yeah England have a strong batting lineup, yeah Australia has a **** one, but there is so much one way **** talking in the English press and on here it's fricking hilarious.

There's a bloody good reason most Aussies on this site are telling you all to watch out for their quicks, and it's not out of some sort of blind desperation. Most of us were born and bred on McGrath, Gillespie, Hughes, McDermott etc, and I can tell you right now, Pattinson will be better than all but one of them when he ties up the boots, and it's the most even bowling lineup from #1-#3 in terms of the quicks, I can remember in 20 years.

You can all sprout the lines of "Wait till they've played more than 10 games blah blah blah", but weather English supporters like to blow it off, whatever, but most good judges of the Australian domestic scene can see we are entering a huge golden era of fast bowlers, there's literally 5-10 potential top quality young test quicks coming through atm, with a few of them ready to have absolute breakout series' in bowler friendly conditions.

Yeah England will probably win, but mother of all thrashing? lol

My biggest wish is England win the toss and bat first at Trent Bridge, the media will be singing a different tune in regards to the series going into day 2, believe me.

That's nothing compared to the bollocks I've had to listen to in 20 years of living here in HMP Oz mate.

Right now the boot is on the other foot and if you or anyone else thinks I'm going to take a backward step with it........forget it son.

I don't believe that the problems Australia have experienced both on and off the field the last few months have just suddenly gone away with the appointment of a new coach and a good show in a warm up game.

I do accept that they have a potentially very good bowling attack and any test side with that is always a chance in any series. My mention of a "hammering" may be overstating the difference between the 2 sides but I do believe we will win and I think it will be comfortable. England have won the last 2 home Ashes series and this is the poorest of those Aussie sides to tour, England are a better side now than they were in 2009.

You could always go back and get work in England, if you feel so austere about life here. Oh wait....

The way TB swings if we win the toss we'll bowl you out before tea old chap.

Certainly are and that was good enough. These crims keep comparing us to last time in Australia but while we aren't in that kind of form we are still better than the last time we won over here.

I love Patto to bits and reckon he's the most promising young quick I've seen in my lifetime (spot-fixers excepted) but I don't see how "what he will or could be" is particularly relevant to this discussion, unless your timeframe is on the order of a few weeks. Granted, what he is already is a bloody frightening bowler.

I really wouldn't much out of yesterday other than the England bats are prone to long stretches where they don't really concentrate... which we've known for ages.

EDIT: The big counterweight to all this of course is that pre-series conventional logic does have a tendency to be proven gloriously, hilariously wrong by the actual cricket on occasion. Remember how everyone not named GIMH thought England-India in England would be close?

I don't know. I'm smelling an upset.

They have a better attack, and their batsmen are misfiring talents rather than spuds. Watson, Hughes, Warne et al. Meanwhile our conversations about England continue to ignore how they're actually playing. It's not 2010 anymore. England weren't just beaten by South Africa, they were mauled. The same South African team got out of jail twice against an Australian attack without its best bowler half the time. The Aussies hit rock bottom in India, but England was similarly embarrassed in Pakistan. The same side limped away from New Zealand and staged a colossal choke in the CT final. There is no form.
Interesting how you say it's not 2010 any more than quote a series 18 months ago as comparable to Australia's last series (where coincidentally England won just before Australia toured)

Spikey, any twitter updates on the makeup of our XI for the news warm up against Worcs?

Interesting to read that Boof has put Siddle on notice. Expecting a better showing from him if given an opportunity.

You are aware that South Africa toured here last November, right...?

Yes, a series you lost 1-0 if I'm not mistaken but my point was that England in Pakistan (which is being used as comparison for Australia in India) was a long time ago in cricketing terms and 3703 is ignoring England's win in India.

'Putting him on notice' a bit strong, no way is Siddle not playing the first Test.
