Holland is a tailender, Boyce is a tailender, McGain is a tailender, Beer is a tailender, Doherty is a tailender. That is nearly half the list of spinners in this country who don't rely on batting to gain a spot.
'Almost' is the key word there mate... O'Brien, Krezja, Hauritz, O'Keffe, Casson, Bailey, Smith, Simpson they all are pretty handy lower order batsman for their state sides, and even likes of Heal and Doherty aren't absolute bunnies!!
One can also throw in names like Maxwell and Floros who are budding all-rounders who bowl spin.

I don't have any studies to back this up, but I would assume that a higher percentage of spin bowlers are handy with the bat compared to fast bowlers throughout every first class competition in the world.

I would assume this is because spinners are more likely to be redundant on certain surfaces, and hence need to offer more to the team. Fast bowlers are good for all occasions

O'Brien gets picked primarily on his batting. He gets through a fair bit of bowling because South Australia don't pick him a spinner but he's a batting allrounder.

Smith? He's not just a 'handy lower order batsman' - imo he's good enough to make it as a batsman alone in our full strength side.

Well bowled by Cameron. That one didn't swing back in like the other ones that Strauss drove did, asking him to play the ball through cover rather than mid-off. He's looked really good driving straight, need to ask him to drive that little bit squarer.

Gah, end of the day for the TV coverage. :(

Oh FFS, Strauss, two overs before the close, seaming pitch, Cameron dangerous, well outside off and you cover drive across the line. Dip****.

Mate... he bats at #8 and plays mainly the role of a spinner. I know he was a batsman who used to bowl occasionally but that seems to have changed now.

Yup... not saying he isn't, but that's the role he plays for Australia and NSW atm.

EDIT: Marky Cameron!!

It's not a case of him developing him lower order batting to get picked as a spinner - he's developed his part-time spin to get a game. The opposite of your point.

Just to take it even more off topic: O'Brien and Christian should bat ahead of Manou every time, at every level, in every format.

Yeah, its the other way around in his case.... since Redbacks don't want to play a spinner (and only god knows why!?) they just use him to roll his arm over and then use his batting ability lower down the order.
Having said that its not as if he is hugely impressive as a spinner or anything, its just his batting that is keeping him in the team ahead of the Cullens, the Redbacks have turned an occasional bowler into a full-time bowler just to satisfy Cricket Australia' stipulation of playing a spinner in every FC side.
