***Official*** Top End Series

India A have won their match against Pakistan A by over 130 runs. Fringe opener Gautam Gambhir scored 142 at more than a run a ball, reminding the selectors that he's still ready. He hit 14 boundaries and two sixes, but more importantly, he scored more runs between the wickets than over the ropes, which is a welcome sign. He was unlucky to be dropped from the Test and ODI side, being just right for both forms of the game, unlike the two openers playing for the respective Indian frontline sides. He's one to watch and the more he plays, the more chances he'll get to force his way back into the Indian Test and ODI team. Another good score by Uthappa gave them a good start.

Chawla got 3 wickets in his ten overs, so he's getting better. It's also good to see RP Singh and Paul getting wickets (two each), and hopefully they'll finish the series with a healthy average and a victory for India A. Both are prospects for the national side, and given the inexperience of someone like Munaf and especially VR Singh even at FC level, these two should make the side sooner than later. Sodhi, however, seems a waste of space in the team. He hardly ever batted and he only lasted six overs, going for 37 runs without picking up a wicket. Maybe he's still using the system in India to his advantage, but he's not an India prospect, even though he's a multi-skilled player. Not so much Vicky Singh, but again, that both actually made the XI shows the selectors blew a fantastic chance to try out better and younger all-rounders in the Indian scene.

Bell scoring a one day hundred? the bowling can't have been much chop. lol.

What a game to watch. Gambhir was amazing. He times the ball perfectly, as well as running out the captain, and Pakistan were not poor in the field. They were good actually.

You expected a world class bowling attack from the 'Northern Territory Chief Minister's XI'? :p

NZ 'A', i think this is the 'black' team...im pretty confused. But they've started well against the N.T side

220/3 after 32 overs.

Shanan Stewart 70, Jesse Ryder 65 & Ross Taylor 43..and they were all better than a run a ball.

It seems that half the NZ domestic players are up there! lol, I suppose it was probably cheaper than sending a squad of 13 to England for 2 months when they could send 26 odd players over to Australia.

Yes, this is the 'black' team Tim.

What's concerning is that McMillan has obviously gone through with his threat as he doesn't appear to be on this tour. English counties were after him from the reports around that time. Could the unbelievable happen and we see him appear in English colours in a few years. He has dual citizenship I believe so does that mean he could turn out for England right now?

According to this scorecard, he played yesterday for the 'white' team. I heard a report awhile ago on www.stuff.co.nz, that he decided to play for NZ 'A' because he wanted to get back into the NZ side and prove himself.

And that scorecard is also wrong, it says Chris Martin was playing, but it was actually Bruce Martin..who seemed to outplay Jeetan Patel quite convincingly in the head-to-head spinner battle.

So he did, I completely missed that! That's good news :)

Didn't he say that before he spit the dummy over not getting a contract?

I have no idea, but i couldn't really care less unless he starts showing some maturity and improvement in his game otherwise he's going to be no use to New Zealand in the future. He's got the ability to be a good international player, but he gives up too easily when things get a little tough.
The other thing is that he appeared to be C & B off a spinner yesterday, so if that is anything to go by..he hasn't fixed much.

McMillan and Styris have got to be the worst at moaning.

McMillan is one of those players that is so frustrating. He has the talent but just can't apply himself.

I think the only way he's going to get back into the side is by developing his bowling more and managing to push ahead of Jacob Oram. Let's face it, so many domestic batsman are ahead of him now.

Styris moaning?

Yeah Styris seems to be a pretty good mouth-piece when things are going bad for the BC's.

McMillan firstly needs to start scoring consistently, and he's just not doing it. He's complaining that he is no longer contracted, but if you look at his last 2 domestic seasons it's pretty fair enough because there have been other batsmen scoring more runs than he has.
If you ask me, Sinclair had a much bigger case to answer for to the selectors than McMillan has ever had recently.

I didn't know that McMillan had dual citizenship, but I suppose he'd be backing himself to get into that English ODI side right now! lol.

Even Matthew Bell would make the English ODI team at the moment Tim

Exactly re your comment on McMillan, and that's why I think his only option is to become a better bowler and try and become a No 6-7 batsman and 5th bowler in our ODI side.

Considering the amount of Test cricket we're playing over the next year (only two Tests), was there much point in handing Sinclair a contract? I guess NZC just really wanted to keep him in NZ.

When it all comes down to it, Sinclair has a superior FC & OD record to the majority of other players in NZ. Only Chris Harris rivals him really in FC cricket. So to lose a player who averages around 46 in FC cricket over so many years would have been seen as a bit of a joke by most other countries when you consider how poorly we've played in test cricket over the last while.

Sinclair is also to blame because when he gets his chance, he hasn't really taken it. But the majority of the blame lies with the selectors because they've pretty much batted him in a different position everytime he has been selected.

I think he's a very capable ODI batsman, but right now it's difficult to see him pushing past the likes of Taylor, Fulton & Hamish Marshall.

On a different subject, looks like NZ A started the charge too early:

5-298 ( McGlashan, 41.4 ov), 6-306 ( Fulton, 43.2 ov), 7-308 ( Diamanti, 43.5 ov), 8-311 ( McSkimming, 44.5 ov)

Good to see Fulton get a quick fire 80.

jeez, it would be a bit of a joke if we were bowled out before 50 overs. Looks likely though.

Very much so, and I don't like the look of that NZ A bowling attack. Full of medium pacers who do nothing with the ball IMO.

Tim

haha, I was going to say. Diamanti, McSkimming & Aldridge aren't going to strike much fear in to anybody!. But for some reason they're pretty good at picking up wickets.
I wish Ian Butler was fit because he would have slotted in to that attack nicely. Isn't Te Ahu Davis up there as well? they should have put him in the side ahead of Diamanti.
