From what I've seen Team GB was mostly predicted to win about 14 gold medals this Olympics, and we're on 10 so far.

Sounds like the track cycling is much more of a question mark than it has been in the past few Olympics, but if we can sneak one or two there, and then a few in boxing/sailing, we should comfortably beat that and hopefully get up to around the 19 golds we got in Beijing. High 20s like London/Rio very optimistic though.

Could get 2 tomorrow in the 3 day event as we have 1st and 3rd in individual and team are in front. We will probably get close to beating Beijing as no doubt we will have some events we haven't thought of that we will do well in.

Maybe, but I don’t think Yohan Blake ever felt satisfied with second place despite being in a similar position. It must really depend on the person.

That said, I think if you started telling an athlete their silver medals weren’t **** they’d quickly betray more complicated feelings about second place than the pure disappointment they’re ‘supposed’ to feel. A bit of unfair external criticism can be great for putting your achievements in perspective.

Johnson was extraordinary. One of my earliest Olympic memories is him in those gold shoes in Atlanta.

Host countries pretty much always get a competitive boost in their Games but even by those standards, this has been an unreal first week for Japan.

According to this projection the 538 website is using, Japan is seriously underperforming against expectations.

The methodology assumes Japan will win more medals just because they're the host, they don't seem to consider who is actually favourites to win the events. But who knows, it's 538 the home of pop-stats, and they always keep their formulae a secret for some reason. The only real medal prospects I can think of that have failed are Naomi, Uchimura, and maybe some swimmers?

In this case it's pretty half arsed. They admit they haven't really tried to do it accurately like they do for other sports because they haven't looked at the personnel involved at all. Just an extrapolation from the three previous olympics.

I really don't like "medals per capita" because having a large population doesn't mean they can all contribute to an athlete's performance like a Goku spirit bomb.
