Ponting likened him to Sehwag after he made that 80 against NZ, not when he came on to the scene (in fact he was likened to Bradman then, having bettered him in a couple of things). But I agree with the general argument that he should be persisted with, he has genuine match wining capabilities which Watson and Katich don't have. Also despite his unorthodox technique, I think he is just great to watch.
The thing with Hughes is, when he gets going he tends to go big, something nethier Watson nor Katich exactly specialise in.

Then again, he's hardly the model of consistency in between those big digs.

At least he has time on his side I suppose.

Again, thats the exact link i posted. Am i invisible on this forum?

Warne rates Tremlett, end of story.
Don't think it's quite as clear cut...he rates him, but there's a big 'if' there. Saying "he's the best bowler in the world in the nets" is not exactly a compliment.

Say he could be the best in the world if he gets it right is however.

The selectors have seriously lost the plot. Beer will be in the team and that is a joke. Doherty was a questionable choice and this is worse. If they are so desperate to have a left arm orthodox spinner why not O'Keefe. To compound matters they obviously don't rate him they pick Smith to bat at 6 or 7 as extra spin cover. Smith is not a test class batsman. He's a handy allrounder that is better at the shorter forms of the game. I could understand if Australia picks 4 quicks and uses Smith as the spare spinner but not with Beer in the side. you can't even say horses for courses as Beer has played 3 FC games in Perth since moving over from Victoria.

Hauritz gets a FC ton in his last game and a 5 for in his last game at Perth and can't get a look in. There must be more behind his non-selection.

As an Aussie I pray they go well but am not overly happy.

Beer has just played 5 first class games and has done nothing of note but still he is now going to be the part of the Australian test side in this all important Ashes test, wow... I mean there is just no ****ing sense in this.
FFS.... if they had to take a punt with an unknown quantity then they should have just gone ahead and picked Boyce, if nothing else atleast he is a wrist spinner.....
The Victorians really rate Boyce, and I'd be a bit happier if he was the selection. A wrist spinner, with a lot of potential, picked with a five wicket haul to his name, and is a long term prospect.

Can't understand how people can change preception about a player so quickly, Hughes is second to none when it comes to getting big runs and his conversion rate both at the test level and FC level are excellent so far.
The thing with Hughes is that for the first time in his career he is having a bit of lean phase, and its just amazing that becuase of that all of sudden so many people are starting to have doubts over his ability.

They're not doubting his ability. They're doubting his technique.

For mine, I'm not doubting his ability, especially over the long term. He's probably the right selection. Just get the feeling though that we're picking him in a bit of a form slump, and that maybe him not succeeding here could leave us with a Bevan-style player, with an amazing FC record but maybe not the number of Test runs that his talent deserved.

Vicleggie, how's Ms Hurley?
Damn good. Like a fine wine, only better with age. To hell with returning to the team, my spinning fingers are occupied with other activities!

Anyone who's doubting my ability at this age, look at how im still diddling the English

When he gets out of his current form slump, Jaques is as good as any out there.

nearly 32 v 21 years of age. For this Australian team to rebuild, would be absolutely ridiculous to pick the former.

Hughes is a superstar. 2 100s in a test against a fiersome South African attack, and then dropped after 2 poortests. Whereas Marcus North hangs on after 10+ poortests.

Doubting his technique? The guy plundered steyn morkel ntini and co. He'll be fine. Look at Sehwag, Cook, Gayle etc. All with chinks in techniques and going fine. Hughes will be a superstar

The point was that in the next 2-3 years, Jaques will likely to be able to pressure Hughes' spot in the team. That is a good thing IMO (tbh, I'd love for both to be in form and at the top of the order together).
