*Official Third Test at Headingley* 25-29 August

England are looking a bit makeshift. Assume Hameed 2 Malan 3. Overton and Mahmood in for Curran and Wood. If England steal a win here India will be furious. India need to find a way to get Ashwin in. I suspect they will be scared of losing Jadeja’s batting by dropping him - so will be interesting to see what they go for especially n

Others might choose a more trenchant adjective.

Taking the "f" out of "shift" brings us closer to the actuality, IMHO.

It'll be a blow to lose Wood but Mahmood is bowling really well this year and is ready for the big time. Less sure about Overton but he can't possibly be worse than Curran.

I just read that Malan has played 15 tests. How and when did that ever happen?
I think he actually played when India last toured in 2018.

From memory it didn't go very well.

EDIT: Just the first test apparently, after recourse to cricinfo. Scores of 8 & 20 suggest my second paragraph was on point though.

Yeah, I also remember him dropping a catch or two in the slips. I knew he'd played and done quite well in Australia during the winter before that series. But 15 was lots more than I had remembered.

15 is nothing really if you're an English Test cricketer. Sibley's got 22 already. Bairstow's played 76 which is more than someone like Trent Boult.
Mad thing is Bairstow should have been dumped for a couple of years yet is in on merit as the rest are so crap. Even more bizarre is the fact he averages 10 runs an innings more as a keeper.

It’s probably a better lineup than the last test tbf. Mahmood and Overton are surely better than Wood and Curran at home and the batting, meh.

Feel kinda dirty saying it but if James Vince is in the runs then I'd support Pope at #3 where he can avoid starting against a spinner with the old ball and Vince at #5 where his desire to play shots is less likely to see him nick off.

Burns
Hameed (he's prettier than Sibley, unsure if he's actually better)
Pope
Root
Vince
Bairstow (there's a perfectly fine #6 in there)
Buttler
Robinson
Leach
Mahmood
Anderson

I have never seen Mahmood bowl but with Robinson in the side I don't think Craig Overton is really needed - his role is covered by a better player.

The England batting is very odd. It potentially has a lot of runs in it on any given day, But it also has the look of an innings defeat in three and a half days.

Is this your XI for the test tomorrow or just a 'best of all fit players'? Pope doesn't know which end of the bat to hold and Leach has been dropped from the squad. That means Moeen is in by default (unless the pitch resembles the outfield).

Isn't Pope in absolutely rank form?
Yeah terrible.

You could argue they're better with a pretty good batsman in terrible form than a never-has-been. You could make a case for almost anyone really. I'd probably have stuck with Sibley.

Yeah I'm sort of ignoring Pope's form because I rate him. Him forgetting how to bat does not help England's thin talent pool rn.
