South Africa have had 2 genuine opportunities to go to number 1 and they fluffed it both times - 1 against Australia at home and the other at home against the Indians. Its their inability to be ruthless enough to close down series that has resulted in a lost opportunity. And they didnt do themselves any favors by almost losing to England at home while bossing the series btw.
Say what you want about England but this new found mean streak is the reason why they are undoubtedly the best team out there. You can thank the blossoming one for that.

yeah, not sure about the Protea love myself, they rely more on Steyn then India do on Zaheer in my opinion, I'm not a big Morne fan though (he was crap in DS9). Our bowling line-up is so superior, I'm not afeared.

Morkel gets a lot of love but I think even if you rate him above our non-Andersom seamers, the fact that we hve Broad, Tremlett and Brezza who are all of similar ability with the ball gives us a massive edge. And Anderson is amazing.
At the end of the day, Saffa were unable to beat us when we were much weaker and couldn't beat an India side we have annhilated. No contest tbh, reckon we'll whitewash them.

It would seem logical that we would get whitewashed too since we are on equal par with India (1-1 series), however, I think we would give a much tougher fight.

That's true. England beat Australia 2-1 in 05 and then went on to get whitewashed 0-5 with pretty much the same side in 07.
So I won't talk so big.

Didn't they also lose at home to OZ. TBH, I thought we were really lucky to get a draw in Safrica, but filthily unlucky to lose to them at home, Smith must have been out five times in his series winning knock.
We're so much better now though, and I'm not sure how much they've improved.
