No reason to declare anytime before close to the end of the day. Let Cook get as far as he can get and build a lead of 500+. If you cant bowl a side out in 2 days then you don't deserve to win.
Here's a few stats that might prompt a bit of debate.
Cook has 5796 (and counting) runs in his 71st Test Match with 19 centuries and 26 fifties.
After 71 matches Tendulkar had 5612 runs to his name with 21 centuries and 21 fifties.
But what's that I hear you say?! "Tendulkar had to play against the likes of Warne Mcgrath Akram Waqar and Murali" I hear you say.
Tendulkar averaged 33 against Pakistan and 36 in Pakistan after 71 matches. Cook averages 40 against Pakistan, without a ball being bowled on sub.c pitches.
Sachin averaged 59 against Australia and 48 in Australia after 71 matches. He scored two centuries in Australia, but neither were against the Aussie attack that had Warne AND Mcgrath.
Cook has a century against that attack plus Lee and Clark at Perth in 06/07.
Even a bloke up to his eyeballs in tea, kippers and the English flag wouldn't bother trying to argue that Cook > Tendulkar. Here's a few stats that might prompt a bit of debate.

I have to say that if he were to retire on 333, my level of respect for him would go up enormously. Would be perfectly symbolic given the kind of impact that Gooch has had on his technique and career over the years. Don't expect it though, the 2011 class of cricketers care more about personal records than anything else.Opta: Alastair Cook now has the second highest Test score by any player against India, behind Gooch's 333.
Could make 333 if he gets a move on tonight. Maybe retire on that score as a nice show of respect to Gooch (if he gets that far of course).
Think he'll be happy enough to have overtaken Compton, Amiss, Graveney, Barrington and Boycott, to be honestI have to say that if he were to retire on 333, my level of respect for him would go up enormously. Still 40 odd short of KP.Cook must be near the top of the series run charts now
