The forecast in Nottingham's about as good as could have been expected, and much better than it was looking yesterday. Might only lose 90 minutes or so, which may depending on how the matches go, just about give the chance to get the final played today.

Go Katie (and Emma).

Emma has turned down the Olympic Games.
Reasons given by Ian Bates include:
- "the late notice"
- "the surface change"

I am a fan of Emma's but I find her incredibly frustrating at times.

It's not hard to work out, she has a chronically bad Wrist (as do many of her biggest fans), it actually ended one of the last Brit Prodigies career, Robson, Del Potro too. It's really hard to know how to go on, the 2 aforementioned players went for ops, so did Emma, 2 of them.

She now clearly wants management, but I fear for her tbh. She's taken massive time out of the game and she still has problems.

Emma's wrists are in good shape, and she has no issue with them, which is great news. Ankle too.

She's got management on tap, whatever she wants.

It was her and her dad's decision not to go to the Olympics, as it always is.

How do you know that her injuries are in great shape, she hadn't played since late April before this Tournament, that seems odd for someone needing ranking points who was fully fit.

She's said they're in great shape.
There was no injury issue with pulling out of Strasbourg or Paris (or Birmingham or Miami).

of course she says that, why give your opponents any hope, why let sponsors know you're probably not going to play?

This is like Sharapova and her chronic shoulder injury, she never let on, often say she pulled out of matches for other injury problems.

The fact is Emma has hardly played for ages, this isn't helping her ranking or her progression, it's not something you do if you are in great shape physically. Just saying she pulled out of four tournaments for shits and giggles is a bit delusional IMHO.

You know nothing about Emma Raducanu, and I can't be bothered to educate someone with your attitude.

You don't know what's going to happen in 4 years, particularly when you're 21.
I hope she gets another opportunity, as otherwise she might regret spurning this one.

She's given a reason of having to change surfaces. Everyone on tour has to change surfaces. Everyone's doing pretty much the same circuit. Nobody else so far as I'm aware has turned the Olympics down. What's Emma's ranking now? Provisional 165 in the world.
Will Swiatek be there? Gauff? Everyone in the top 10? Probably. Will they have to change surfaces?
Not Emma though.

As for late notice, she gave Birmingham 2 days notice she's not going to turn up, just as she gave Ronan Garros 2 days notice, and Miami 1 day's notice.
Yet the Olympics giving her a month and a half notice isn't acceptable (she always knew when they announced who they'd offer the places to anyway).

Anyway, it's been an amazing day and week for British tennis, and Emma has had a good week too. Apologies for dwelling on negative points. I just get frustrated with her, and wish she could be a bit more like Katie (maybe she does too, and obviously there are expectations on her which most don't have, and I recognise that).

I was probably unfair on Raducanu.
Obviously I don't know what exactly is driving the decision making process.
She's expressly said that it's not her being a "diva" lol. That is the concern I suppose for me as so many things kind of give that impression with not very much contradicting it, but she can't be expected to make decisions based on that perception.

As I understand it the reason for the withdrawals were a combination of match ups, working on changing her serve, changed strategy over surfaces, and likely protecting her body with a gradual return to competitive tennis.
I don't believe she has had any specific injuries as such this year. It's quite easy to tell with Emma because she parades them around court like a flashing sign, and she's evasive on interviews when there's an issue (rather than making flat out statements as she has done with her wrists). Also she was practising on hard courts when she withdrew from the French Open.

It seems the strategy is to have consistent runs on grass and hard, possibly avoid clay for some reason, take things steady, and target ranking points where she can.
Up to her, and maybe she can steal a few ranking points while everyone else is at the Olympics.
Maybe it's a bit misogynistic of me criticising her drive and professionalism. Obviously she has a belief in where she's going and how she's going to get there, and fair play to her for that.
