Only his second win against one of Muzz, Novak or Fed since 2014 French Open. Other one was vs. Muzz at the World Tour Finals.

I don't want to pre-empt a return to top 4-5 players for him because I did that after he ended last year strong and then he bombed out to Verdasco and lost to some hack on the clay soon after. But he does look good right now when he flatten the ball and stops his loopy ****. He can't grind mother ****ers down anymore because he's not as quick and he hits way more errors nowadays. So he needs to attack more like he did in the last 2 sets today.

Plenty for Murray to be happy about with that performance. Played a beautiful first set, and some lovely tennis throughout.

I know Novak beat Rafa last year, but it would be fitting if Novak won his first French beating Rafa in the final.

Wonderful to see him back.

Though it does seem somehow weird that "greatest clay court player of all time wins clay court tournament he's won eight times before" is somehow a surprise feel-good story.

i thought rafa already had the record for the max clay titles...anyway he has now equalled vilas and should beat him either this season or the next...would make sense that the greatest clay courter of all time holds that record...

Rafa already got 9 at the French when he won Roland Garros in 2014. That was a grand slam record but I've no idea what the ATP record would be.

the record at a single tournament is 9 wins and rafa has won 9 titles at three events! no one has won 9 times at any event...
