Well done kid. Good for the men's game. All these upsets coming from journeymen don't really make you look to the future, but this does.

Weird day at Wimbledon.

FTR, I cleaned up on NK winning the First Set @ 4.65. Didn't have the nous to bet on him to win the match.

"You're talking of Nadal playing brilliantly," says Kevin Lee. "The Spaniard had 44 winners and 18 unforced errors. That is sheer excellence. How many times has Nadal had nearly a 2.5-to-1 ratio of winners to errors and lost? Kyrgios managed to smash 70 winners against 31 errors. Mind-boggling."

That just about sums it up. Also noteworthy is that Kyrgios hit 37 aces and won 83% of first serves.
From the Guardian liveblog (though IIRC Wimbledon doesn't measure unforced errors like everyone else?)

The only time I can remember seeing stats like those on the serve was that crazy Roddick - El Aynoui match about ten years back.

Yeah, Rafa has 2 Wimbledons and made 5 Wimbledon finals. And rafa played elite but still lost. That should go some way to summing up how ridiculously amazing this win by Kyrigios is.

The kid played a bit like Rosol a couple of years ago. Match of his life and Rafa didn't stand a chance.

He needs to nick Balotelli's "Why always me" phrase for Wimbledon in recent years.

Ended up watching a decent chunk of the Kyrgios match since the football was average. Only the second or third time I've watched him, just looks so natural, and his serve is incredibly consistent. 90%+ first serves in the final set? Crazy.

Must be among the best ever performances by someone his age.

His serve looks so effortless, too. Barely any elaborate routine to it, just steps up and blasts the damn thing.

I only saw the first few games before kipping, but the kid reminds me of Sampras in style (not suggesting level, of course).

No fuss between points, massive serve; big, flat forehand.

Certainly a remarkable result. A nation holds its breath now, and prays "Don't do a Tomic"

Well certainly of recent years, but back in the eighties people used to win slams at his age or younger. Mind you the last teen who beat a World Number 1 was apparently Nadal, so it's not a bad omen.

Shouldn't have been given a WC IMHO though should of gone to an Englishman rated about 633 in the world.

Need to see some extended highlights of this - followed the live comms but want to see some of NG's service games

Yeah I more meant the level of play rather than the scalp. Though I think beating Nadal is significant, obviously it happens from time to time since he's human and has bad games. But was a really solid game for someone his age and Nadal played well too. Not something that happens often, anyway.

The level of play from Kyrgios was just ridiculous. Nadal was struggling to lay his racquet on the ball during most of Kyrgios's service games and half of Nadal's service games seemed to start at 30-30. Just completely overpowered. Should be an interesting quarter-final against Raonic.

Tomic, Kyrgios, Kokkinakis. Dermo can't handle it. What happened to the good old Australian tennis player names, like Rafter, Woodforde and Philippoussis

At last year’s Australian Open, Raonic, currently ranked ninth in the world — 135 places above Kyrgios — revealed that when his parents were contemplating a move to Melbourne in the 80s, the Australian immigration system had proven too difficult, so they opted for Canada.

“It is actually a funny story,” Raonic said. “We had friends here (in Australia) when my parents were looking for where to move to and the immigration papers here were much longer than Canada’s one page.

“It was only one page and my parents didn’t speak any English, so that helped Canada’s case.”
Dermo approves
