On the question of if India can make it out of the Super Eights, I highly doubt it actually. Yes they will have Tendulkar and their best, but I think that every other team that makes the super eights can probably rough em up quite a bit, with the exception maybe of Pakistan. I would not be surprised at all if India disappoint heavily come February.
I think it's just quarter finals, which IMO makes it much more of a lottery, and in a funny way, much more interesting.

England is A LOT better now than people make them out to be. We'll see this come Ashes and WC time for sure.

I think a lot of people are going to be surprised come World Cup time, cause I have an odd feeling that India's not making the final, or coming close for that matter. They'll make it past groups, but when you have to play the Dutch, Irish, and Bangladesh, then the Super Eight is a lock. We won't be having Super Eight stages, quarter finals instead.
India have much cause to worry about presently and the tour to SA will be important in determining where they stand.
Even though I don't support India, I wouldn't want them to fail miserably; it's something they did in the previous World Cup already and the spark might diminish in the place where you will be having the whole event. It's never a nice thing.

I like the quarter finals better, shortens the tournament and mantains interest.
Won't be an advantage for the Saffers though who I will be supporting.

Quarterfinals are going to be so epic. Super8/6 might be more thorough, but it just doesn't do it for me.

India at home will make it to the quarters, not much doubt in my mind.
Hopefully all top 8 teams get though to the quarter finals - otherwise someone is going to get a really easy game.

Unless 2011 is the year we see The Eye Of The Tiger.

Especially when Kenya/Ireland etc get through. Sets up a few pretty mud games that the tournament doesn't need sadly.

Though Bangladesh did surprise the Saff last time around.

Super Eight = Quarters

It's all the same really just now a knockout bracket past the 16. I think I like this format the best actually, groups and then 8-team knockout. Makes it seem like proper league like UEFA or the Euros or something. Point is yes India will make quarters, no they won't progress into semis unless they play Pakistan.

jeez, is Mills the most consistently blatant code of conduct breacher in cricket? I think he gets away with it because his bowling is so physically non-threatening, and because he's just a loveable dorky NZer.
He does chuck in quite a few "F Offs", and never seems to get pulled up.

Maybe he pulls out the old "I wasn't directing it at the batsman, I was just venting my frustration" line.

He also seems to be really unfortunate with how clearly the stump mic picks him up as well.

'96 QFs were epic. :D (though it's a shame the tournament had to be abandoned after that..)

I don't really mind Bangladesh, Ireland etc. causing an upset or two even if it makes for some one-sided matches, complacent "bigger name" teams deserve what they get.

Yeah, and Ireland gave Bangladesh a taste of their own medicine too :p

I personally love the upset, and I think it's good for cricket that these teams can begin striving for and grabbing bigger and bigger results and parts of the pot. You can't be stuck on the same top 4-5 teams or the same 9 test nations forever, at some point or another the game has to expand and include more teams. Why do you think the Olympics are as big as they are? Because people want to watch the man from Togo grab the only medal in his country's history.

I love the odd upset as well - but it makes for a really crud tournament when a team gets the upset, makes it through to the Super 6 playoff round, then plays 3 or 4 games against teams that they most likely won't be able to beat.

That's why they play the game though. They said that about the Indian team that won their first World Cup. The point is that in 10-15 years, maybe we'll be looking at 11 test nations and a stronger, more diverse World Cup with a lot of stronger teams. Everyone's gotta start somewhere, and in winning these upsets, they can inspire up and coming players to train harder and become better. It may seem crud yes, but in the long run it should pay off huge dividends.

Hmmm... well maybe the ICC need to look at World Cup format to see how they can limit the meaningless games. I'm all for minnows at the World Cup - but the thought of Ireland going up against the likes of SA, IND, AUS, SL in a "Super" 6 turns me off.

If they did that there'd be no point in having the World Cup in the first place then. They might as well just go and award the No. 1 ranked team the cup straight out. Teams gotta earn it on the big stage, and if that means chocking to Bangladesh, then so be it. One of these years someone's gonna become the Davidson or the Geroge Mason of the tournament and go very deep to a huge surprise that it'll set up one of the most exciting and unpredictable tournaments the world has yet to see.

Starting to wonder if the mods could move these posts to another thread? It's a great topic but it's derailling the thread a touch. Maybe call it "Minnows at the World Cup"?

Hey it's fine. Little off topic but alas it's about how this Tri Series is a preview of the WC so kinda on topic as well. None the less, I actually like NZ v SL in the final of this series.
