Only Gilchrist and Flower have over 10 centuries as keeper so I'd say SA have had their fair share. I think that's the most stacked keeper bat roster of any nation, in fact.
Yep, there's nothing wrong with that. Australia's list is:
Gilchrist 17
Healy 4
Haddin 4
Marsh 3
Wade 2
Carey 1
Phillips 1

And that's over more test matches. Shows how much of an outlier Gilchrist was.

Okay I'm going to refrain from criticism for Shukri's selections now. He clearly saw something different in Patterson but it's nice to see that someone who is effectively (Rabada , Nortje, Jansen, Burger, Coetzee, Ngidi, Williams?) 8th in line with our seamers doing well.

Indeed 😁. He is 35 now too.

Normally I would say our greats could perform or have performed at that age. Did many even get to that age since readmission?
Pollock played his last at 35 but his role had reduced by then. Donald was 36 but injuries had already affected him. Big Vern 35 when he retired. Dale was 36 when he retired but injuries had badly affected the last few years already.
Makhaya only reached 32 and Morne 34.

We really should have done better with the bat today. I think we started the day slightly ahead but SA look like they are in a good position now.
Surprised to wake up (had a lie-in after staying up late for obvious reasons!) to South Africa building a first innings lead after the position you were in, although I suppose with a very weak 8-11, the onus is on the top 7 to do the business. Must be very frustrating to see so many starts but nobody really cashing in

You expect class to last longer.

Interesting to see if many other quicks/seamers got to 35+ & played test matches. Obviously some of the over-lappers from isolation might have? Like Fanie?

Steve Elworthy was one like Pato. Seemed to have his best years well into his 30s.

It is. I fell like this was a missed opportunity to put ourselves in a position to win and now we're playing catchup.

Fanie played his last match at 33 and Brian McMillan at 34. Kallis played till 38, but obviously wasn't bowling all that much by then.

The only 2 quicks in internationals I can think of that went late into 30's and beyond are Courtney and Jimmy. Pigeon gave up tests at 37.

Fanie retired at 34. Elworthy got to 37.

It may be that his bowling is well-suited for St George's and he mind get found out elsewhere. But even if he wouldn't go so well at another ground, you certainly can't fault his performance in this match. So just maybe we do have a coach who knows what he's doing.
