Rabada not having a great game so far, pace is down and he is bowling a lot of pies.
He hasn't been too hot since Hobart and pace has been really down here. Was close to 150kph at times in Australia and from the passages of play I saw yesterday he wasn't getting above 135kph. If there is any niggles with him they should have him sit out of the Cape Town test. Will be needed more at The Wanderers than Newlands.

Another 5-er. He's a machine.

Easily the most valuable cricketer in the world right now.

If you'd said say five years ago that South Africa would have three seamers playing in home conditions, all averaging under 25 (two of them under 22) and Steyn wasn't one of them, no one would've believed you.

Very good start by Cook and Elgar here. Ball is doing tons and they have weathered the storm.

And that Morkel won't be able to make the team.

Yea I've suspected since that final Adelaide test that he might be carrying an injury, Steyn being injured that first match meant that he had a lot of bowling to do.

Ouch SL, but sadly predictable. SA surely won't bat more than a session tomorrow morning will they?

More than Ashwin?
It's very very close between the two of them. I was sorely tempted to say Ashwin, the man has 24 5-ers already in his short career and is a better batsman than Vern. The only thing making me pick Vern is that he bowled match-winning spells in both England and Aus, and only injury has kept him from making an impact in Asia. Hopefully Ashwin does the same next time he tours outside Asia.

Both are eerily similar in terms of their batting ability down the order. They have good averages but sometimes I feel even that doesn't do justice to the number of crucial knocks they've played when the team's really needed some lower-order runs. They nearly always get it done.

Basically I like to come here and bore people about how much I rate Philander, it's weird how people call him a green-track bully or pick on him for faking injury to protect his average. :p

Yeah all valid points and I've thought Philander is massively underrated ever since South Africa toured England in 2012. I'm a big big fan.

But I wouldn't state that Ashwin doing well outside Asia is the equivalent of Philander doing well in Australia or England. Sure the latter two aren't the same as South African conditions but they're more similar than Ashwin going to NZ or England.
