Was playing around with some stats this morning, wondering whether McCullum has enough left in his career to become our top run scorer. Interestingly found than if he can maintain equivalent form to what he has enjoyed for the last 2 years he will overtake Fleming with almost identical stats.

My calculation suggests that McCullum will draw equal in 108 tests, 187 innings at an average of 40.29 vs Flemings 111 tests 189 innings average of 40.06.

Will be interesting for the stats nerds to see whether McCullum can make it in less time than Fleming and whether he can get his career ave over 40. Don't know what his goals or retirement thoughts are but it would make a nice touch stone to grab that record before he packs it in. Not sure of the test schedule coming up but I suspect it will likely happen in 2016 sometime.

This is such a ridiculous generation of NZ cricketers.
Indeed, wasn't there a "NZ golden generation" thread set up a few years back, based on players like Southee, Williamson, Anderson etc? Would be interesting to dig up in retrospect.

A couple tours coming up that may not see McCullum score quite as many. I can't see him coming close to a double in England.

I reckon it's because they grew up inspired by the Flem/Cairns/Astle/Bond etc era, wheras a fair few of the current 19/20/21 crop probably got put off due to some of the rubbish sides we put out from 2007-2012ish and went to other sports. Nothing like successful sides to inspire youth.

Agree but theres plplenty of consistency he can add to his game too. The calculation relies on him scoring about runs per test, which should be achievable over a decent period for a world class batsman in any sort of form. Unless his current form is pure fluke then theres no reason to think he's not in the most productive period of his career.

I last year I think he was scoring under 50 or a double hundred, so bring some of the outliers back toward the middle and he should be alright. Although the way he bats is a bit all or nothing so maybe not. We shall see.

Yeah I think you can deffo pick up the probable influences of say Seifert and Phillips, that McCullum was a huge thing for them when they about 12, and perhaps only him.

Also fair to say cricket became a bit like a TV show that started going really broad and brutal with its appeal, from about 2008. The kids who wanted a subtle and knowing show with plenty to chew on, they seem to have largely drifted off.

When I was a kid I was hoping we would still be garbage so it would be easier for me to get in the team.

Judging by the interweb it looks like the weather has set fair. Should be a good contest. I'm keen to see Elliott and Boult. Hopefully they both play.

Boult, Milne, McClenaghan, Anderson, McCullum and Elliott are the bowlers in today's team. Sri Lanka batting on what looks to be a good, hard, dry pitch.
