I'm with those thinking the declaration was a tad premature, about 8 overs & 40 runs for me. I agree chasing 390 is a highly unlikely sniff, but why give them a sniff at all.

In some ways I think it may have been tougher for SL's batsmen if they were will and truly batted out of the game. We may have had 8 overs less bowling at them, but I think they'd be utterly demoralised chasing say 430 off 100 overs.

Anyone, here's hoping it's a non-issue.

So, the better innings: Sangakkara's 203 or Williamson's 242*? Feel Sanga's innings wasn't as chancy.
i think its a bit unfair to compare the two tbh as Sanga is an experienced player who has been there and done it all over, whereas KW is at the beginning of his journey and so will get even better with time..both really good innings and got their respective teams out of trouble..

AWTA. And Sanga was up against a better quality attack and started out when the conditions hadn't eased. Also he was coming off a poor test in Christchurch.

The 242 does speak volumes for KW's temperament though. The way it was constructed, that was some innings for a 24-year old.

Agree. I wasn't really being serious when I posted the lose-to-win stuff, would have batted until BJ got his well-deserved 150 and NZ had a total of about 410-420. That being said, I don't really think 390 is that easy a target to achieve, so I'm not really too miffed with Baz's declaration. If SL play well enough to win this then credit to them.

Either way I'm hoping our bowling makes this discussion redundant :)

Please hang around and post more.

Three wickets, should've had four in the first innings. Give him a chance.
Nah, even when he took that 6-fer I only rated the spell, not him as a bowler. I mean, I don't think he's a spud or anything, but I'd take Wagner (in all but the poorest of form), Henry, Milne and a couple of others ahead of him.

He feels like a 34 with the ball, 19 with the bat kinda guy to me -- too good for domestix, but never quite good enough to consistently dominate at Test level.

Once upon a time two blokes averaging 34 and one averaging 33 were our best bowlers. Only one could bat.

How times and expectations have changed.

On a side note, Wagner doesn't do medium form. He's hot or he's not. If he had medium form he would still be in the team. Wagner was probably a lot closer to playing this test than it looks because he ticks a lot of Hesson boxes but the disparity between his best and his worst is Guptill and Craig like, and something that would annoy a careful planner like Hesson because Wagner at his worst releases all the pressure.

Dougeh is better than spud Wagner, but awesome Wagner is better especially for this attack.

EDIT: Dan's description of Doug makes me imagine Dan sees Bracewell as the new Andre Adams. I think if Adams had more chances he would have been solid without being crazy good, and with the way Dougeh is starting to rock domestix he has a long and illustrious Plunket career ahead if he fails tests.

Also if he (Doug) oversteps tomorrow and costs us a wicket I will send him some hate mail via the blackcaps fan mail system (if it still works - greatest invention while it lasted - I know they suspended it during Ross Gate).

Which led to articles like "We don't rate the blackcaps bowlers says KP"
And then they would have a picture of Chris Martin next to the article looking pissed off.
