FTR when I'm picking Williamson at 3 and Southee in the attack, it's based on what they've done to date, not extrapolation. I genuinely believe that their respective careers to date get them into the XI.

Watling, eh, maybe that's a bit of a piss-take when Baz had the career he did with the gloves, but I really rate the guy.

He scored a ton 4 tests ago to set the game up in the UAE fortress ffs. Jesus Christ, it's like talking to Benchmark00 all over again.

Taylor's going downhill at a rate of knots, he's also had the precious position of four - you tell me any other NZ batsman averaging mid forties in the modern era as an opening batsman and I'll select them.
My that's a bit harsh. He did score a ton and a 50 in UAE. He also scored 39no out to win us the first test against SL. Also don't forget his ton and 90no in the ODIs.

Averaged 35 last year when everyone else around him except opener #2 and Anderson was 40+

Also, his ODI form is fine - because when he's playing attacking innings, he doesn't suffer from his weaknesses at the crease. He's a fine hitter of the cricket ball. He just at the moment, cannot defend to save himself.

ok scoring 2 an over off Thirimanne isn't cute anymore. It's effectively like me running up and bowling slightly slower balls at international batsmen, and I play Senior Bs.

It's actually fine for Blocky to select whomever he wants in his NZ ATG XI - he can prefer Wagner over Hadlee if he wants to.

Some of the justification would work out better with a simple "I subjectively think this guy is the better player".

I personally have often felt that McCullum>Taylor, at least for a lot of time during their careers. But I'm quite happy to concede that Taylor has had better output, played better knocks and generally actually been the better batsmen by most ways that we choose to measure the stick.

I think it's quite reasonable to claim that McCullum has had a more difficult career in where he's batted for the team and the relative strengths of the sides in which they've played.
Yeah this is a good post. Baz has produced amazing moments but on the whole has been pretty inconsistent, and his stats have been dented by doing two or three jobs through his career. Like Vettori, McCullum's career average lies.

Declare with 10 oversleft tonight. Sri Lanka are not gonna score 400 in 100 overs barring the greatest test knock of all time for an Asian batsman.

Also gonna go total anti-Blocky and select Boult in the all-time XI. Gives you a point of difference and Hadlee basically covers Southee's role with better batting. Bond to provide pace with the old ball. Cairns being one spot too high in the batting order is covered by a strong 7,8 and 9. And Cairns averaged about 50 in the last phrase of his career.

Turner
Sutcliffe
Williamson
Crowe (c)
Taylor
Cairns
McCullum (wk)
Hadlee
Vettori
Bond
Boult

 me some Kane. Was always weird that he hadn't made big tons/doubles to date, but I think he's going to have a career filled with them.

Hadlee and Cairns were seamers predominately, who occasionally got swing.
