Karthik is unfairly getting lambasted. For once I wish people looked from his pov. He hardly gets more than 3-4 games in a year thanks to monopolisation by Dhoni, and when he gets a game, he hardly gets a fair go with the bat. Also it was evident Karthik was trying to provide for Sachin's 100 by blocking. But problem was he was blocking intentionally hittable deliveries and hence due to unnatural curbing of his aggressive instincts was constantly edging here and there. I was certain he would either had to go for it at some point in time or get out defending perfectly smashable balls. He chose the former and am glad for it.

Yeah, I have little issues with him hitting the winning runs tbh. If Sachin wanted the 100, he should have hit out earlier. This and him requesting the Lankans time to get his 100 in the test series leaves a bad taste in the mouth.

The test match century was very much in line. The Lankans played for two whole days. Playing out 10 overs to get to a century is not in anyway out of line. The fact that they kept bowling wide outside the off stump to prevent him from scoring a century made the extra overs necessary.

What difference does it make? Sachin has enough centuries anyway, and a lot of them against teams better than this Lankan outfit. Winning the match was a lot more important.

Besides, the journalism around Indian cricket has been a little too yellow lately. Once, Dhoni was castigated for putting "self before team" to get to his century, even though that gave his team a massive cushion in the game, and also helped his batting (and also the team's balance) in the long term. Earlier, he was criticised for not getting enough centuries, and now this. Then Mike Young was observing the fielding of the U-19s, briefly, and some news channel said that he was shirking work, when he should have been with the frontline team. Way back, they also ran a feature, which asked why Bhajji and Yusuf should be in the team, when both were struggling for form, and needed support. One of them is out anyway, and a similar campaign may be run on some current players, but the way that feature was composed, felt very distasteful. Then this happened- like Sachin scoring an inconsequential century against a flimsy attack is more important than adding options to the team.

Issue is not taking 96* in a winning cause vs. 100* in a losing cause. It's about taking 96* in a winning cause vs. 100* in a winning cause.

Karthik is finished with his international career. :p

Karthik didn't mean to hit the winning runs. It wasn't really an attacking shot. He only got a boundary because the fine leg was up.

Since he remained on 96*, it shifts to 96* in a winning cause vs 100* in a losing cause for a consolation PoV  (you can't be crying over spilled milk)

I dont think Sachin had any issues here. As for the test 100, there is nothing wrong imo. A deserved 100 and it also put (legitimately) Lankans that extra time on the field and is a good mental disintegration tactic.

C'mon guys. If you are going to play Ishant Sharma, then bowl him mainly at the death - he is totally useless in the early and middle overs. The fact is that he does not move the ball and so is fodder on flat pitches. His pace has faded slightly too from an average of around 142kph to an average of around 137kph which does not help things. If there is a pitch which will seam around, then he should possibly play as an attacking option but on a flat pitch, we need bowlers with more guile, like Zaheer, like Ashish. This is not to say that we will accept Bhatia bowling at 115kph with a great deal of variations but if you lack movement, you simply will not survive in ODI cricket in the subcontinent.

Moreover, our sloppy fielding once again costs us. Harbhajan dropped a catch that you would simply never ever see an Australia, England, South Africa or New Zealand fielder drop in a million years. If we had nipped Sangakkara early, we would be in some control, atm. Nehra also dropped Tharanga, but caught and bowleds can be difficult and I will not fault him for puttingthat down.

India's spin options have been shown up yet again. They had an advantage, as the Lankans struggled initially, but that was given away as partnerships were built, and now they're on a good platform. This is why Indians end up chasing big totals, or why they lose matches despite scoring big first. It's a very soft spot in the bowling lineup, but nothing seems to happen. In comparison, the pace bowlers (bar a struggling Ishant, who had to face Dilshan) were a lot better, and got crucial wickets. They've had it very hard in this series, and done well for their team.

Then there's Karthik's wicketkeeping. This strange policy of playing him as a reserve specialist batsman has ruined his wicketkeeping a great deal. He's not used to it, and when he could be wicketkeeping for India or his domestic team, he's either on the bench or outfielding. He's been tried as a batsman, but his wicketkeeping was a lot more crucial, and it's now let the team down again. The Indian fielding has done what it can do best, when they've had to face set batsmen going hard, on a flat deck, in a fast outfield, and have been unsighted a few times. Yet again, pressure told on them.

p.s. There's still little discussion during these ODIs. Noticed that?

Good one Nehra- he bowls one in the blockhole, and Mahela pushes it out, attempts a single, but Nehra picks up and hits the stumps with a throw- and Mahela's nowhere in.

Nehra's up there with Zoysa as one of the worst fielders of the decade! Trying to fend off the ball while lying on the ropes! Lmao!

This Lakmal guy is troubling the Indians with bounce. I think its the first time they've experienced it the whole series.

India lose Sehwag and Sachin, who they surely were going to rely upon with Dhoni and Yuvraj out.

Going to be tough from here.
