Great Morale boosting win for SL !! From down in the dumps they have fought their way to level the series .

My overall assessment of this series is that England really deserved to win it , since they are far better Team man to man except for Murali and Sangakkara .

So it must be pretty gut wrenching for the real die hard English fans to see their Team draw a series they should have won.

I can feel their disappointment. But all i can say is there was some degree of complacency from England at Lords which lead to their failing to win a Test they should've nailed long before the Final Day. They then really gained a very strong victory at Edgbaston being on top from the first session . Complacency then crept in after demolishing SL's top order midway thru second session of this 3rd Test to let SL's tail eke out a match saving 90 odd. From thereon SL worked to a plan and set themselves for what seems a comfortable win in the end.

Score cards tell lies and so do match results. The reality is England won 80 percent of the sessions of cricket , but the series will show a tied result. This great game can be pretty unfair . As a Sri Lankan I will take it quite happily given the amount of bad luck the country as a whole is going thru'.

And the sweetness of this victory is further enhanced by the fact that Poor Umpiring by Hair couldn't do a thing when it came to the end result. Though he tried bloody hard.

English are the greatest sporting minded people in the world. A fact that is confirmed by the number of English commentators and fans who have congratulated the underdog SL on pulling this one despite their own personal disappointment. I commend them and admire them for their generosity of character !!

By the same token , I also come across quite a lot of jealous posters from Down Under whose jealousy and hatred cannot be restrained and they are overwhelmed by the great performance of SL's star cricketer Murali who they have for long wanted to be ridiculed and removed. Its an amazing contradiction. The competitor (England) cheers you and commends you while the other (who has no active participation in this contest) despises your win and tries hard to belittle you even at your moment of glory !!

To them I only have these words I picked from Michael Henderson- (one who really should belong amongst them for his jealous sour grapes mentality of reverting to Muralis several time cleared action but who despite this, paid an amazing tribute to the Master Bowler ) "One man, it is said, cannot make a team, but now and again one man does. Without Diego Maradona, Argentina would not have got beyond the quarter-final stage of the 1986 World Cup. With him they won it, square if not always fair. Yesterday’s fizz-bang events by the Trent confirmed that, without Muttiah Muralitharan, Sri Lanka’s cricketers might struggle to master the owl and the pu*sycat if they played all week by the light of a silvery moon.”

Wow. What a bowler.

England should have won that series though, come the summer they'll no doubt lift their game another level. Hopefully it's two full-strength squads going tooth and nail come Brisbane.

Great performance by Murali - absolutely fantastic.
I could'nt believe it last night when my sister rang me from England with the scores!

106 Tests, 635 Wickets (1 wicket short of a SR of 6 wkts/test), 53 5-Fors (1 every 2 tests) and 16 Ten-fors (1 every 6 1/2 ish tests). Phenomenal.

But lets not forget the rest of the SL team.
Murali set the seal on this game but it was part of an organised team effort that began all the way in the second SL inning at Lords. They really have come together in a way I have not seen for a long time in a Sri Lankan side. Kudos to Jayawardene and Moody and the rest of the senior players who would have played an instrumental part in this.
Let's hope they can keep it up.

Tough luck for the English but they don't deserve to win this series.
Their play simply was'nt good enough.
From a certain point of view I was very glad that SL drew this series - as some of the pre-series remarks by some English media and commentators was, to say the least, terribly patronising and condescending. This SL team performance seems to have shoved their heads into some humble pie and also given them a collective 2 finger salute.

All credit to the majority of the English fans though. Some great sportsmanship all around - especially on these boards where some of the earlier posts had me cracking up!

Here's hoping for a great one day series, and last but most definitely not least a quick and healthy recovery for Freddie.

Nah, the team that wins always deserves to win it. If you don't win, it doesn't matter if you are somehow 'better'. If you don't win, you aren't better.

Last summer England was better than Australia. If the series had been 3-2 the other way (say, lee had gotten those runs, and warney had knocked the English out), then Australia would have been the better team, even if you think 'England dominated australia'. Regardless of what it looked like, if they lost, they obviously didn't.

It all seems obvious of course, but I hate when someone says "Team x is better than team y, they should have won." What counts is who is better on that day.

So...after this string of performances by England, starting in Pakistan....does anyone think England can retain the Ashes?

Of course we can. If all our first-choice players are fit there's no reason why we can't compete. The thing that's got us all so worried is that if all our first-choice players aren't fit, we don't have a prayer.

I don't know. I mean your first choice players aren't performing at the Ashes level either. And some of your replacements (Panesar, Cook) are doing just as well, if not better than your first choice players.

I think some English fans are using this injury thing as a crutch and it's kind of blinding them a little bit.

I mean, don't get me wrong. I would LOVE for England to keep the Ashes, I'll be rooting for them. I rooted for Australia last time, but since reading some of the comments in that WC thread by some aussies and NZ'ers, I can't ever root for Australia again. So I think it would be fantastic if they win.....but realisitically, I don't see how (of course...I didn't see how the last time either ;)).

Not with the current form some are showing.

However, I shouldn't write us off too early.

I think if England can get on a roll, regardless of whether they have a few injuries or not [Flintoff out would smart a little too much], they can win it. Just like the last series, once they got momentum they never lost it. I think that if they grab the momentum, they won't lose it.

For Australia to win IMO, they need to dominate. Otherwise, England will come home at the crunch time. That's just my opinion though.

Oh Please - Dont post crap like this. You have a habit of taking credit away from SriLanka.

How did england deserve to win the series ? They were playing at home and their performance was pathetic. England has better bowlers, but SriLanka have Murali and that evens out. Batting side I think SriLanka are at par with England.

And no they were not FAR better as you have been trying to portray for a while.

If we could win it last time, we can win it this time. If we don't go over there thinking that we can win, then we might as well stay home.

Well, they should certainly go in with confidence. Us fans can afford to be a little bit realistic ;).
